When was the last time medicne developed a cure for a major chronic disease? 9/8/2006 1:45PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
You always hear about research working toward a 'cure' for this or that disease. However, it seems to me that there are very few, if any major diseases that can be cured other than the ones which are capable of resolving on their own. In other words, it seems that medicine has never really found a cure for any major chronic illness or health problem. Is this observaiton accurate? If so, why should anyone believe that cures will ever be developed?

Yes, Lance Armstrong's cancer resolved itself on its own. Dick Cheney's heart disease is doing a bang-up job unclogging his arteries. Bacterial infections the world over are magically eradicating themselves in the absence of antibiotics. And small pox is no longer a factor - or even in existence - in the world because the millions it killed in order to perpetuate itself led to some severe self-searching analysis, depression, and a decision by the virus to commit mass suicide.

This list of diseases cured, prevented, and held at bay by medicine is so long that not even the letsrun message board could contain it.

They will all be cured soon due mostly to the funds raised by the TNT whales at marathons. The cure would have been found 2 years ago if the "runners" would have paid their own expenses.

Here's one off the top of my head:

Last week the FDA approved a vaccine called Gardasil which, in clinical trials has been demonstrated to have approaching 100% efficacy in preventing cervical cancer caused by HPV types 16 an 18.

Is prevention as good as a cure?

I don't know if this qualifies as a 'major chronic illness', but what about Viagra? :p

They have prevention, which is as good as cures for lots of childhood diseases.
It is called imunisation.
Last week some of the idiots on letsrun were posting all the reasons to avoid immunising their children.

Medicine didn't have anything to do with the cure for blueballitis, which is the internet. It is up to people to take their health and well-being into their own hands!

NO prevention and holding at bay are not equivalent to cures.
