Died doing what he loved, working with animals. a stingray barb pierced his chest while he was filming an underwater documentary.

I suppose it was only a matter of time, even if it was a freak accident. Too bad. The guy was a bit annoying, but he knew his stuff.

Death by sting-ray barb through chest- a "freak" accident indeed, *for anybody else*. For Steve, it went with the territory, and I'm sure he knew it. R.I.P.

Crikeys! Irwin wasn't 'working' with animals he was haeassing them. Have you ever seen one of the animals that he was prodding with sticks and grabbing their tales that looked happy?

Cobras, and mamabas, and kraits, and vipers, and asps everywhere will have one less human to worry about. Stingrays too.

Shows how suddenly your life can change...or end. Hearing about this kind of thing just reminds you that you should enjoy every moment of your life and make it what you want; don't settle for anything less. You only have one life, and it can be short.

If that was a serious concern of his he would have found a differnt job. C'mon, he made choices.

on stingray barbs:

Never underestimate the penetrating ability of a stingray’s barb, even on the smallest of stingrays. The stingray’s barb is designed to penetrate virtually all sorts of dense materials, including wood and sting1.jpg (25455 bytes)leather. And as unbelievable as it may seem, it’s been documented that large stingrays are able to drive a barb through a boat’s wooden planks or completely through a persons arm or leg.

According to Dr. Shipp, when a stingray strikes, it either removes its barb entirely, or breaks it off inside of the victim. When this occurs, doctors must probe the wound to make sure all particles have been removed, so the injury will not result in gangrene. In cases where the barb deeply penetrated, the wound must be enlarged to make sure it is properly cleaned.

Aside from the pain and serious laceration caused by the razor-sharp barb, which can sever arteries and possibly an Achilles tendon, a poison is released that can produce a drastic decrease in blood pressure, increased pulse, dizziness and possible shock

So everyone who has children should become monks and hermits to protect themselves from being innocent bystanders during shootouts, car wrecks, plane and train crashes, faulty amusement park rides etc?

Do you really not see the difference between driving to work or going to Six Flags and wrestling crocs, handling cobras, and messing with komodo dragons?

Steve knew the dangers but coped with them for the sake of his career, but I am amazed at the ordinary people who think it is cute to pet crocodiles or swim with the lovely stingrays, so nieve.

At least in theory monks should not have kids. Neither should hermits.

Does anyone else think this story is hilarious? I'm an anti-death anti-tragedy type of guy, but Crocodile Hunter being laid low by a sting-ray puncture to the chest is some high drama/comedy. Surely crocodiles everywhere are upset that a ray has claim to this hit rather than one of their own.

Ah, but no disrespect to the CH, his was a life lived well. Best of luck in the Beyond mate.
