Meg and Abdi move to #3 and #6 on the All-time US lists. Did they get a split at 20k? They would have to be under the AR (although "assisted", more that 30% from start to finish), probably about 58:20.

does anyone else find it sad that the american record for the half marathon was set in 1959??
You are kidding, right?

It was set by a guy who was born in 1959. Much happier.
how did culpepper do? how did the other americans do? julia stamps? etc
The nyrr.org site does seem to be having trouble with results
oops, didn't read that right, still 1985 was a long time ago too
Lets get serious and get the results up! A major race like this and you can't get the results? If your site is down go to another or pass them on to Let's run!

I noticed a decent headwind coming down the West Side, but that may have been due to the rain that started when I was at mile 10 (leaders had just finished). Not sure if a shift occured or not.
That must have been a rush ripping down 7th through Times Square then ripping down 42nd Street? Perfect weather too.
The original proposal would have been even better -- straight down Broadway to downtown.

Agree on both counts. I'm plotting VCP to Liberty Street at 14 miles but Broadway isn't the most direct route. Perhaps there's a way to have a "mostly" Broadway course with staging at VCP.

I think VCP to Liberty would be too hilly, but it would be very cool.
The significance of Broadway is that it was the original Indian trail that ran the length of Manhattan island.
I think it would gave been one of the best road races anywhere had the course gone Times Square, Macys, Flatiron Bldg, Union Square, Little Italy, Chinatown, Men in Black Building, City Hall, Wall Street, Battery Park.

As to wind, Meb and the other leaders mentioned a headwind at the post-race press conf.
Running down Broadway would have been cool, but no way the city would sign off on that, at least not the first year. Maybe next time - NYRR is already talking about tweking the course, getting more of it out of the park.
West Side Highway is kind of a double-edged sword. On one hand, the pavement was smooth as a pool table, unlike all that pothole patchwork on 7th Ave. However, it was concrete, so I bet a lot of people's legs are sore tomorrow. And if it had been sunny and hot, that could have been a death march. The rain may have sucked somewhat, but the worst people got were some blisters - if it had been a day like we had in July, the ambulances would have been going back and forth to the hospitals like crazy. I looked at all the bags of ice they had stockpiled in the med tents and thought how lucky they were not to need them; and obviously, the planned misting stations weren't brought online either.
Would have been nice to hand out mylar space blankets at the end, but who'd expect to need them in August in NY? They were passing out golf towels to dry off with, which was nice.
All in all, good event out of the box - we'll see what happens next year when the field increases to 15,000 and it's 90 degrees and humid.

Uhm, Jim, 90 degrees and humid at 7:00am? Not gonna happen.
It was close in 2002 and there were lots of ambulances put to use that morning. The West Side Highway - and the concrete - would be very very difficult to contend with in the conditions JimG described. The extra 5,000 runners will likely come from the 2hour plus crowd. That could be scary.

August 4, 2002 was about as humid as it can possibly get in NYC, however, the 9:00am temperature was 83 degrees and 72 percent humidity, that's a thick as pea soup. The 7am temp was 79 degrees. The high temperature for that day was 90' (and 46% RH). No need for you to embellish.
Furthermore, this race is not August 4, but August 27. It is very unlikely that on any August 27 at 7:00am you will ever have a day such as August 4, 2002. The difference between the beginning of August in NYC and the end of August is like night and day.
You're going to have to practice up on that research thing.
