Some guy called Micah Kogo ran 26:35 to win the Brussels 10000m last night. This is a real problem, not because I don't think it was achieved fairly, I've no idea, but because no-one has ever heard of him. He's now 6th fastest of all time with what would be a national record in any country except Kenya and Ethiopia, but honestly, has anyone heard of him before? All I can find on him is a 13 min 5k earlier this year and a 13:15 last year.
The problem for athletics is that, like any sport, it relies on personalities for people to be interested in it. For a European to run a really fast 10k time they will normally will have been on the scene for years. People would have formed an opinion of them, they would have been profiled in the papers, interviewed track-side after races, discussed on this board. People would care about how fast they ran, just as they do for more established African stars such as Target, Geb or even to some extent Tadesse who was second yesterday. It's hard to care how fast some random Kenyan you've never heard of runs.
It's a shame to great such an extraordinary performance in such a negative way but it is a bit depressing.
