I've never heard of a track race in the course of a meet running at 1am; unless it was some 24 hour relay or something. What were they, 3 hours behind schedule?

They were about 1 hour behind schedule, due to there being extra heats in the women's invitational mile, the men's 10,000, and men's steeplechase (about an hour of extra races)

It is not often one gets the opportunity to run with a three-time world record holder.
Actually, Henry simultaneously held world records in at least four events (3,000 meters; 3000-meter steeplechase; 5,000 meters; and 10,000 meters), and broke his own world record at 5,000 meters.

I haven't seen or run with Henry in almost twenty years, but I hope to get the chance to do so again in the not-too-distant future.

I hope that Henry is O.K. I would guess that his hamstrings were giving him problems during the race. Of course, trying to run hard at 1:15 a.m., when he's normally asleep and his body temperature is normally near its low point of the day, couldn't be easy on 55-year-old muscles and tendons.

You don't run your best everyday. Things can be very up and down when you're getting back into shape after and trying new things.

Probably a few factors that just made it a rough day. No reason to feel down about it.

Let me echo those who say it was great to meet Henry at Hillsdale. He inspires us all.

Friday night/Saturday morning were cold, dank, with occasionally-gusting winds. It didn't help anyone running at 1:15 a.m. after being at the track for hours. Henry was gracious, approachable and encouraging to all around.

If the 18:55 was a disappointment, I did not see it in less than 8 hours later, when Henry showed up to walk/jog in the Wyld Bill 5K road race. His regimen continues. Who knows the ups and downs of running better?

We are cheering for Henry in Michigan!

Henry is an early-to-bed, early riser. 1:15 am would be like racing at 4:00 am for the average runner.

How did this event get so far behind schedule, weather?

Actually, it wasn't that far off schedule. They had 3 heats of the men's 10,000 and 5 heats in the 5,000. Each went off according to seed time. They ran 2 heats of the 5, then 3 heats of the 10, then went back for the last 3 heats of the 5,000. I think they did a great job handling the total number of athletes there. I believe they limited the fields to about 40 athletes per heat.

As far a s Henry's 5,000. It was late in MI (1:15 some say) but that's only 11:15 (still rather late but not 1 am) in Albq.

The meet DID run late. The good news: lots of people made qualifying times and/or wanted to run open races. Gotta love when your meet's in demand.

Which was also bad news: by not capping entries, organizers saw multiple flights of distance races extend the meet into a cold/dank morning.

Understand in recent years, Hillsdale Fridays have extended until near midnight -- still a long day, but not like this year. Gina was well-run, crisply, without dithering, but sponsors -- in trying to accommodate so many people (hard to get TOO mad at them for that) -- saw the time thing get out of hand

If demand like this year's continues, they will need to rework a few things.

The 328 day of training phase II. Dr. Gary and I went out for run for 40 minutes,I felt as if I lost 15 minutes on that run. I sweat a gallon of water, we had a very nice rhythm that can burn the fat out of me.I like running with a partner it makes different in the world.

I was move with warm-welcome by the people of Hillsdale. The school kids from elementary through college level were very please to have me there in town.

Coach Bill and his athlete Lewis organize my trip so nice that I was so overwhelm with the pleasant treatment. It made things for me go easy in Hillsdale in which I was able to meet most of the people from the little man all the way to the College president.
thanks Dr.Gary, coach Bill,Lewis and all their families for bringing me town to your meet,I had a wonderfull time town there.

To Avocados Number the next trip is Spokane,Washington for Bloomsday 12k on May 6,2007.Turning the clock back I was there 25 years ago. I did won the race in 1982,now heading back to Spokane on Friday.I have Monday-through Thurday for training and healing my hamstrings and quads on the right leg.

Last Friday after six laps I felt the sharp pain on my right hamstring, then for another lap it came straight directly to the quads on the same leg why is that. That is why I did dragg my legs for the last few laps were left and finish with 18:56 minutes. My am was to equet Carlsbad time;however,it turned out as it happened.I have crowns cheering for every step to all the way to the finish line.

For Spokane I will pace myself on 6 minutes per mile. Then the following week after that On May 12 is One-mile in Portland Oregon.Coming down from longer distances pace to a mile pace now for the pace of 5 minutes a mile and better.

are you sure it's smart to try and race through a strained hamstring, that could start affecting other body part problems, like the knees, quads, hips, etc? I want to see you make it to the world championships in 4 months, not crash and burn now! Take care, Henry.
