Thanks, Henry. There are two very important corollaries at work here. 1) Just because you read it on the internet doesn't mean it's true. 2) Just because you can't find it on the internet doesn't mean it's not true. I cannot find any other reference to the 1999 Yomiuri Marathon other than this 7th pace from Horio Noritomi (2:15:49). |

Henry[/quote] smart idea to break into the racing spikes slow and gradually or you'll end up with sore calfs and achilles tendons. (not to mention the hamstring problem). light weight racing flats should suffice until you really get into serious racing shape. good luck in Michigan next week. |

I have started to log on www.running2win.com in what I think is a better format Henry's training from the letsrun.com thread. All I did was match up, as best I could, the training that he posted on there. ALL of the mileage is just a guess since Henry does not go by mileage, but rather by minutes. For most of the miles, I put it in the 10-12 min/mile range. There are some missing days which I couldn't find right away. I have only begun to put in about the last years worth of runs, but I have managed to get in the last 3 months or so, and hopefully will continue to put in some more runs as time goes on. Henry is going to be at the Hillsdale College Gina Relays, and from the information I got tonight, he will be running the 5000m on the track late Friday night. Everyone in Hillsdale is really excited about you coming Henry! Here is a link to his log. http://www.running2win.com/community/public-log.asp?m=Henry+Rono&k=letsrun |

r2w: I think that's a good idea. I log my workouts on www.running2win.com too. Maybe Henry will log his traing there himself? Henry? Patti Dillon just started doing so a couple of weeks ago. She mentioned that maybe Henry would do it too... ---Braavo |

Malmo- Where do you have these results from 1980s NCAA track meets (with Henry's splits)? Do you get the data from a source like T&FN or do you have the video? I'm interested because my old high school coach ran at about the same time in the NCAA 5k and had some great stories (not sure if they were from the same exact year as Henry's infamous 5k prelim but it would be + or - a year). If you have the video I'd love to see it. I don't want to post the coach's name in case his stories are bull (or I misheard them). I know he was there and was good but not sure if things unfolded the way he said. Anyway if you have video of those meets I'd love to see it... I'll check back on this thread in a few days... |

I'm going with 17:20, or 17:10 if you wear spikes (I don't think you should wear spikes yet). Surprise us again and run under 17:00... |

what would u predict if he was 155 lbs? (the race is next weekend). |

Good question. I'm assuming that he'll be at least a few pounds lighter than he was at Carlsbad. I'm guessing that he was near 175 at Carlsbad, and that he'll be between 165 and 170 by next week. If he were at 155, I would predict about 16:45. It's amazing to me that Henry has been able to do all of this training and has been able to run so well at such high weights. I would love to see what he can do at a good racing weight. Of course, the important thing is for him to feel good about where he is and where he is headed. |

Henry I asked a question about Edwin Moses's training as he mentioned he lived with you at some point. Apparently the post got deleted. Is there anything about his training you would like to comment on since he has been somewhat mysterious about his methods until recently? |

If Henry weighs 175 now and can run 17:20 (my prediction) I would put him at 16:20 at the weight of 155. There is a rule of thumb of 2s per mile per pound which would put him almost 2 minutes faster without the weight. I tend to the conservative side when speculating about "potential" times so I say 1s per mile per pound or about a minute faster. It's just a guess though. A few years ago I came back from 6 years of no training and trained for a year (before getting sidetracked by a hernia operation) similar in theory but less in volume than Henry. By the end of that year I was able to run 10k within 40s per mile of my PR wearing trainers and not having done any specific work (and only my first race in about 8 years). I was 20lb over my old racing weight at the time and while I could imagine running at my PR pace if I were 20lb lighter, I could not see how any more weight was going to come off as I already looked like a total skeleton. Maybe if I hadn't gotten sidetracked and could have put in another year of training that weight would have come off, but I didn't see how it would at the time I got injured. I believe that the deciding factor on whether Henry will destroy records or just get tantalizingly close will be how much weight his stubborn body is willing to give up. He may be able to drop to 145 or his body may refuse to give up another pound. Looking at the photos of him I think he has a lot more hope than I did a couple years ago. |

In Carlsbad I was around 175-8lbs,I believe by next week I will have stable weight of 168-172lbs.with sensitivity of hamstring in I hope I will be free by monday. Yes people can tell how much my weight is.Eventhough I was telling the press I'm 165,they knew that I'm 10lbs over than what I'm saying and they were right. So I was weighing 175-8lbs for sure and ran 17:48 minutes for 5k. What will happen with stable weight of 170lbs in hillsdale meet 5k around the track no sipkes though. Henry |
