it was for sure in the 1992 world championships , when gebresalasie got punched in the head from behind by the kenyan Josephat Machuka. Geb sat and unleased an amazing last 200m and Machuka couldnt respond and right at the finish nailed him in the head. The funny part is when geb goes to shake his hand a couple minutes later. I have it on tape still.

Unfortunately, you are confusing two seperate events. At the 1993 World Championships (1992 was an Olympic year), Geb was leaching off of Moses Tanui for virtually the entire race. With one lap to go, Haile accidently steps on Tanui's foot, causing Tanui to go apeshit. He kicked off his own shoe, starting hitting himself in the head, and goes into a full, dead on sprint with about 390 meters to go. Haile slowly caught up to him with about 100 meters left in the race and barely beat him. Tanui was pissed. Haile went to shake his hand and Tanui starts pointing at him with his shoe (which he has now retreived from the track) and refuses to shake Haile's hand. The Canadian Broadcast company interviewer (don't recall his name) went to interview Tanui, and Tanui just starts going crazy in broken english about how "my kick is too fast, he had to cheat to win, etc. etc." When the interviewer points out to Tanui that he may have actually won had he not started absolutely sprinting with 400 meters to go, Tanui just lost it. It wasn't a fight, but it was probably the funniest damn thing I have seen an elite distance runner do and say in an interview.

john bowden and andrew mcguigan at the end of an 800m heat in ottawa back in 89. some interesting gesturing and shoving as well as some colourful language... all in the last 80 meters or so

Spring of 1970 I believe...Matt Centrowitz was a freshman at Andrew Jackson HS in Queens, NY (before he transferred to Power Memorial) running the 2 mile. This was a dual meet vs. Jamaica HS (my school) on Jackson's 352 yard track. In the middle of the race, Jackson's ace runner, Lenny Carlisle, gets in a dispute with a spectator. Lenny steps off the track, fights with the guy a little, gets back on the track and wins!! If Matt is out there, he can tell his version.

was at a relay road race about 10 years and this 300lb fat guy came out on his porch and started screaming obscene things at the runners. He was evidently mad that the road was closed on this Sunday afternoon. Anyway, the race director (all of 145 lbs) ran down the road, called the dude out on the porch and decked him with one punch. The dude fell back through his sceen door onto his own kitchen floor. The race director stepped off the porch and went to the line for the relay exchange moments later. The funny thing was, the dude he punched was his step grandmothers son. The guy has never been seen on race day since. That's justice in the mountains boys. No cops, no arrests, only justice.

I meant this one :0)

ACC indoors at clemson back at 2004 had an awsome fight! An fsu kid pushed a clemson kid off the track in the 400 and got dq'ed. after the race finished he started walking back down the track and the clemson guy got up and walked towards him, where they started a shoving match. the stands quickly emptied and an all out brawl between FSU and Clemson ensued. i was talking to ian hornabrook of FSU at the time so i got a great seat to the festivities!

It was awsome!... the fight delayed the meet over 30 minutes as there was little security on hand to deal with it. the following week i voted for clemson and FSU on the top of my ballot for the ACC's sportsmanship award.

You missed the part about Tye Hill (the Clemson guy...now an NFL 1st round draftee) shoved a UNC guy off the track earlier in the race before trying to show Antonio Cromartie (FSU guy...also first round draftee to San Diego [whale's vagina]) out of the way so he could win the race. The fight was pretty cool though, I guess.[/quote]

Talk about gross exaggerations and total b.s. I was there in 2004 at Clemson and all it was was a little shoving match between country boys. No ghetto hoods at FSU or Clemson. I'm typing this from a dial-up line in South Central L.A. [I ain't shittin you, I hear the L.A.P.D. pig's helicopter overhead right now]. The officials broke it up in less that 10 seconds. The Clemson team was in it's normal spot at the end of the 1st turn next to the window. The FSU team was 180 degrees on the opposite side of the track. Both teams jumped out but were so far apart, the coaches and officials stopped any fights before they started. There must have been 50-75 officials and coaches there since it was the ACC indoors. The only contact was between the two guys on the track.

couple years back at our conference meet, two post high school guys got into a fight when we were running. one pulled a gun, the other a knife, the knife guy went to the hospital, the gun guy ran. big news, meet was postponed, it sucked

"The ucla guy was Ville Ritola. 4:01 indoor miler."

no, that guy was Ben Aragon. again not a fight, Hall was elbowing like crazy and boxing aragon in. hall and aragon had some words, during and afterwards. robinson and hall had been boxing aragon in when hall went down.

hall was more concerned with boxing guys in then running his race. well, now hall has improved and aragon, who knows what he is up to now.

It was Braunskill who hit Trapp actually.

I was working at that meet (ACC indoor Championships in Johnson City, TN). Trapp (along with Michael Green from Jamaica and another sprinter I cannot recall) had previously swept the 55m for Clemson and were apparently talking trash to Kevin Braunskill from NCState in the blocks during the 200 later in the day. Braunskill won the 200 handily with Trapp coming in third (Reggie Harris from UNC came in second). On the victory podium, Braunskill said something that ticked Trapp off and Trapp knocked Braunskill's winner's plaque out of his hand. Braunskill picked it up and hit Trapp with it.

The next day someone stopped me on the street to ask me about 'the fight.' Apparently, ESPN showed footage and I was squarely in the picture during their footage.

the greatest fight ever was the 86 SWC 3K, Arkansas and Texas. Its legendary in both camps. It was the last big scoring race of the meet and both coaches put as many guys as they could in the race. It turned into a roller derby. Guys jumping in/jumping out. Guys getting pushed off the track/tackled/etc. I don't know an exact number of how many guys were DQ'd but it was quite a few. Both coaches were laughing about it. I never saw it but heard guys and assistant coaches speak of the race fondly. If anyone has details, I would love to hear. Joe Falcon won the race btw. I wonder if Consiglio was in the race or would have details.

I heard the '96(?) MIAC Outdoor Championships were brutal.
Wasn't there... but heard S. Riddick(Coach from NSU) incited what was basically a riot.

Can anyone confirm this?

what about the time crazy russ zeigler from franklin and marshall tackled the the guy from western maryland on the back stretch (3rd leg) in the 4x4 about 10 years ago at the centennial conference meet.

they had been jostling for position and zeigler tripped, so he decided if he was going to go they both would....dragged the guy right into the grass inside lane 1 and they started throwing punches...the race went on without them...funny stuff.
