Clearly there must be some certified record for this. Anybody know what it is? What about for other distances with a downward trend?

Hey that really interesting, I would really like to know what the record is also. Today I ate shit head first running down a steep hill haha. I would not even want to imagine how bad I would wipe out after running a mile down hill.
wonder what the uphill is too. If there are such kept records, they probably have to be by the exact distance of how long and steep the hill was.
I once fell off a really high cliff. It took me about 2:44 to fall a mile before landing in a pillow factory. That's the record as far as I know.
I recall reading something before about some fairly well known Kenyan running in the mid 3:30s at a downhill mile somewhere for the record.
Try the search function. I know this has been covered here before. IIRC, Steve Scott's name was mentioned.
About 10 years ago I ran the first leg of Hood to Coast relay, about 5 miles. My first mile was 4:56. and I was a normally a 6:25 miler. There were four of us rounding a turn then I looked back and there were just three of us! oops sombody missed the turn! I am sure that some of the faster runners got under 4 minutes. pxx
From a NY Times article in 1982:
In Auckland, New Zealand, the fastest mile run ever timed will never be recognized officially.
Steve Scott, an American, was timed in 3 minutes 31.25 seconds in a mile race down Auckland's main street today. The course dropped 200 feet over the distance. Mike Hillardt of Australia was second in 3:32.25, Ray Flynn of Ireland third in 3:32.75 and John Walker of New Zealand fourth in 3:33.93.
Casey Batey (Marshall Alumni) has the fastest downhill Mile on american soil at the mile road race in Wheeling WV. He ran 3;39!
Last time this topic came up, it was mentioned that Mike Boit once ran 3:28, with Steve Scott right behind him in 3:29.
Steve Scott completing 18 holes in under 30 minutes is the best running record, bar none.
Steve Scott Gallowalked a 3:25 mile.
I ran a mile downhill back in 1993 in 3.24. Here is the link to the national newspaper and I also went back the following year with record breakers to try and run faster but only managed 3.26 that was recorded for television.
