Carla was/is from Holland and a real speedster in her day, I am pretty sure she was not Finnish. Is Jan Ettle still competing, she was a real talent also?
Henry, finding the right shoe fit is key, personally I like to train in a racing flat, I have for most of my athletic
career, the best way for me to feel good in a shoe is as though it is a hand in glove feel, the shoe conforms to my foot lightly and I still feel in touch with terra firma.
I got sore ankles running in the foothills above Tramway as well though, massage therapy will help!

to w8n4u,
I ran a whole bunch of marathons. OTC and Honolulu in 78, then 10 years later did everything from pittsburg to LA to TC to the 92 trials to vegas. Was Buerskens that blond (Finnish?) woman? I was with her until the kahala mall I think. I was in 2nd until diamond head when Jan Ettle stomped me on the uphill and I finshed third. Just this week I started to put more hills into the mostly flat miles I've been running. Have to keep working on that weakness because I really think it would befun to go run cascade this year and I don't want to suck too badly!

runamook,

Yes, Buerskens won 2 or 3 years in a row. I thought you had her the year you ran. Believe me, you stomped a lot of other runners that year. Your other note said you only ran 2 marathons.

Henry, sorry to insert this note to runamook. Best of luck. I'm enjoying hearing about your comeback.[/quote]

who would win a 5k race in (let's say, December, to give you more time to lose weight and get in shape); between you, Ngeno, Kimowamba, Koech and Kimeto? A WSU alumni race.

You should try to get the Gerry L. in on it too. You could getRudy, Alberto, and a few more Ducks together and have Nike add it as an exhibtion before next fall's Borderclash. That would be a treat to see.
What do you think Henry? A 4k cross country race on the Nike campus in Beaverton. That would be worth the price of admission.

The Nike campus is a horrible "spectators course." Perhaps another venue would ensure that the race has plenty of visible areas for spectators?

But a UO vs. WSU dual would fit with the Borderclash theme. Look at the publicity posters from the last few years. Take 7-10 willing participants from each school and have an exhibition. The race itself would be pretty anti-climatic, but it would be cool to see the yellow/green and crimson/white jersey clad runners going after it.
We need to get Josh Rowe and John Truax on this one.

Henry,
Nike has been putting on a High School meet between the top 40 runners from Oregona nd Washington for the last few years now. It's called the Borderclash. They run the 4k XC race on the Nike campus. The coolest part is the start. They have each state's team start at opposite ends of the field and run towards each other until they meet and turn onto the course after the first 100 meters.

It is an awesome event and I know many would love to see the former Duck and Cougar runners toe the line and get after it.

Check the link that I've included to see some great photos from the good old days.

Henry, you should be warned, Gerry Lindgren is nuts.

Be nice!!!

We all have our querks and quarks or whatever. Gerry is Gerry, and I hope he continues to contribute here, in spite of nasty remarks. He is a running legend, and we should be so lucky that letsrun is his forum of choice.

Wow Henry - you never had an injury? Man, over the decades, I've come to see hills as THE most important thing you can do for form and strength and maybe even speed....Hills have been very important to Henry, even on the morning of World Record Days!!!

Did you ever do long, gradual hills, Henry?

Elite runners injured athletes. They have to coach high school, and small colleges before University.

Look at it
that should answer your question. Comeback afetr

To Skuj,
Yes, In fact I have a plan for that next month,I will run from 6500ft-10000ft gradually going sizac up to top make a U turn back to the start. That should knock down few lbs right? That is how I cameback 1986 very quick.Right now I'm making preparation to be in shape for the gradual up hill to 10000ft.I will to do it once a week. The rest is going to be minor hills such as copper hill. They should put my name on.With all of that training I'm putting in will Gerry Lingren come a long with me in the race.

Hey Henry! I checked that other thread. I think more good things are coming your way, in time. :)

I enjoy hearing from The Great Lindgren. I hope he contributes here. Maybe Gerry will soon look up the 60-65 Mile record? :)

Malmo-don't think I have seen this in any of the posts but did you ever race with Henry, especially in the SC?

My first race for money ($400) a September 1977 3000m in Furth, Germany. With 200m to go, I was full of run, firing on all pistons, right off the shoulder of the leader, getting ready to make my move. With just 80m to go, three monkeys and two bears had climbed on my back, and I was doubting my ability to finish the race. I think Henry was 2nd, I was 6th.

Was the $400 accompanied by at least a peck on the cheek from a cute German gal?

On my way to work this afternoon I remembered a happy moment from 1983 at my happy hunting ground the Mt Sac Relays. About 3/4 of the way through a particularly talent rich 10,000m I heard a voice close by talking to me, commenting on being relaxed, it was Henry Rono. Thanks Henry!! One of your first coaching sessions maybe?

Rono was the man!, I hope that this time around he finds a coach who thinks of hem as more then a score. If I had to hammer day after day I would drink too!

With that much power and stammina I bet he could have run a 10k time that would have lasted longer then the 800 record.
