Check out "Run with Champions". I read this book that talks about all these great american runners. On the woman's side, #12 is Patti Catalano Dillon. Some highlights: Boston Marathon 1981: 2:27:52 10k: 32:09 Half-Marathon: 1:14:04 (doesn't seem all that great compared to that marathon though!!) Mainly a road runner, but a fierce competitor. Got into running to lose weight and get away from a negative crowd. Was doing about 150 miles/week at the peak. Is most of this correct Patti? Good book though. |

Then back to the negative crowd at Letsrun. Patti runs circles around the little boys here. (not you, Marc Bloom reader) |

To Patti, Let me tell you something you are very entertaining person.I love the way you are putting your concept to meet the objectives. My concern is athlete development to be successful and to stay free injuries as I did for four years from 1978-82.What do you do to the body to reach that level of free injury?I will comeback.I can see your concern. Meanwhile.Find the levels of an athlete successful winner. How many levels of an athlete requires to meet and to compete in Olympic level and win a medal? This should help you understand me and what I'm doing here now? Henry |

Yep this LetsRun message board, a sort of running reunion even though I never personally met Patti Catalano/Dillon I had the honour of being in the same marathon, (Bawston) Boston 1981 finished some considerable time behind her...those downhills beat the crap out of my quads...30 min. to walk/jog the last 3 miles....well what an experience...she was a few days, ago kind enough to email me, meant a lot to me! |

Patti's a wild an crazy girl..back in that magical year of '78, she was the queen of the road. I had the pleasure of partying with her at her 1st(?) honolulu victory. When I drifted away in the next few years, I kept an eye on what she was up to, then she dissapeared as well. Damn, Girl! a cracked tailbone!!! Ouch!. No wonder you weren't sitting at your computer! Henry, I find I keep the injuries at bay these days if I don't exceed 60 miles a week. At more that that, I loose too much weight and things start to break down, so that seems to be my limit now.. at my best in my thirties, I was 80-100 miles and could stay healthy . You have to find the level of training that works for you. It sounds like you have good support with massage and have the luxury this summer of time to rest!!. Skuj, Boston was my last marathon ('93) and the only one besides that '78 Honolulu I did ,badly trounced by Patti and others that took me 3 hours. The last 45 minutes of Boston was the most painful time I have ever spent on my feet. The quads were ok, but my toes were all blistered to the point of bleeding into my shoes. I'm so glad I did it though as It may truly have been my last race at that distance. I still want to see Patti go back to Oahu and kick some next December. |

I have a great photo of Patti running a 15 km in Portland, which might have been the first professional race. There were many outstanding runners there and I took many pictures of them, which are around here somewhere. I will post a note on here if I find them again. |

Aha that would have been The Cascade Runoff Portland, 1981. The first professional race...in which I was all set to go do, but was warned I would be classified as a pro and therefore would taint anyone else who ran in any local race I entered. What a dilemma, I bowed out, totally pissed off, especially when it turned out nothing of the sort happened to those whom I KNEW were running it regardless! Ran this following year and what a great race it was!!!! Imagine running stride for stride for awhile with Ann Audain..talk about being fit then! |

Amazing! How the sport has changed in just 25yrs. What will the next 25yrs bring? Henry, do you plan on doing track workouts this summer? When will you know that you are ready for this kind of work? |

To Skuj, When you say work out this summer what do you mean? The intervals? You also mention about in the last 25 yrs the world of sports have changed? Moreover you say what will be in the next 25 yrs? Do you think is going to be any difference? Sports have changed in what way? About my intervals is one day my feelings will tell me.so I can tell you until then. When that light comes that is the time I will hit the intervals. All I know the differences are athlete will have education in commputer tools to be able to watch one another on development of communiction;however, the running part will slow down in some people. But people who like to talk about feelings and running will rise up. But people such as patti, who are got up with the mind of fear of injures will lack behind.Holding horses when they are ready to move so to speak. For not listen to their feelings.I'm gettting ready for massage let me go.see you Henry |

Runamook, If you are who I think you are, didn't you run a lot more than two marathons? I remember you almost beating Buerskens(sp)in Honolulu in the late 80's. Pretty sure you qualified for the OT back then. |

T Rainbow, The equetion for this morning section was not too shiffy:36wr+54hr+20cr= How many total minutes for this morning section? How many minutes is for warming up? How many minutes is for hill-climbing? How many minutes is for cool-down? This is a class assignment for my student rainbow and his concern. Rainbow ought to pay attention to instruction in this class? I'm going to take a cat-nape Henry |

Rainbow, smartin up and listen to people who tell you that you are talking out your ass. If you had been paying attention you would have known that all of Henrys running is slow. Slow running won't hurt a fly. |
