Vanquers where the green and yellow ones with an orange swoosh. I think they might have come out around 1980 but maybe they were around in 79. |

Thank you Henry. I feel that 2006 is a turning point for distance running in North America, and sprinting for that matter. There are signs of real progress at the top, and this could filter down to the grassroots. What comes first, the chicken or the egg? :) I wonder if one big mental block for North Americans is that many believe we cannot compete with Africans because "they are gentically superior at running", so we don't stand much chance no matter what we do in lifestyle / training. I know this is a controversial issue, and I completely understand if you choose not to comment. |

I wore Vanquers in 1979 and I still have them. They may have even been around in 1978 as well?? From the look of this picture these were not the standard Vanquers. Even though it is a black & white photo they seem to be too dark. The standard Vanquers where a florescent yellow with green leather trim on the heel and toe box with an orange swoosh. Something else about this pic; If you Zoom in on the bib number the writing above the number says something that ends with "society" Not sure this means anything but to someone it may be a clue?? http://www.sporting-heroes.net/files_athletics/RONO_Henry_1980_GH_T.jpg |

You old guys will remember that Nike made what they referred to as promo shoes for their top athletes. These were stock shoes in different colors. I have a pair of vanquers that are red with a black swoosh. They are standard just different in color. They are from 1979-1982 when Nike was giving me shoes, have many other models in some pretty wild colors. |

To Skuj, Thank You, Skuj-I wanted you to give me an opening statement like that,"I wonder if one big mental block for North American is that many believes we cannot compete with African because They are gentically superior at running"..... That statement alone is what has been blocking you North American continent to lack behind because of bad attitude towards developing and keeping up with progress in sports, who is leading in running sports first since the beginning? When did Africans coming in and took the lead? This is the questions the leaders of sports needs to question themselves and answer them.I like this question because enlightment is the key to progress. So don't be scared to give me questions. In the same token, I shouldn't be scared to do my best to answere them.We both weigh them to know where North America went wrong.Along the way you were taken by surprise;however,What was the origin of the sports philosophy?Where running began? What was the point for running? Yes, they were prototypes. I had a pair of the Elite's (flat) with red nylon and a white swoosh. They were the fist made with the "mini waffle" The over the counter model was blue/yellow. It looks like Henry took a left and a right shoe from each box! I'm looking for the photo of him clearing the water jump @ the Comm Games I think 1978? Didn't seem to slow him down, I think he ran 8:18?

Slaps, Vanquers came in different colors. They were around as early as 1976 or 77. Doug Brown wore blue on blue Vanquers (The Cruel Shoes) when he became the first American steeplechaser to dip under 8:20 in 1978. |

Pre841, this can tie in nicely in with the topic of kids today having that desire Henry talks about. When I had one good guy, all the rest sat back because they "knew" they couldn't compete with him. I got a good girl this year who believed she could run just as well as the boys, and when they saw how hard she was working, by the end of the season they all had picked it up and were closer to the top guy (they also feared running slower times than the girl!). Now they all believe they have a shot to be near the top, and have clear goals for this year. Many of my kids don't have the internet at home and I pass on books and magazines for them to read. I find when they learn about the history of this sport, they really start looking tto find their place in that history. Anything is possible. Henry's book is on my wish list for sure! |

Yes, in 78 Rono was in the World Games field in Helsinki. He stayed at the back of the pack for about 4 laps, then blew by the field on the home straight and never looked. Like a cat playing with a mouse. |

I'm going to guess is was Jeff Johnson that came up with it. Phil Knight's first choice for the name of the company "Prefontaine Exploitation Company" was voted down when Bowerman pissed on his leg. |
