anyone know results from the big ten mens 10k?
All I know is that I drove past the track when it was supposed to be going on and no one was there. I haven't been able to find out why it was delayed or canceled.
it wasnt delayed, there are results to every other event from today, so STFU
the only change of plan was Brian Olinger completely dominated Bairu and his Wisconsin teammates. Wins easily in 28:44 and his coach was yelling at him to relax the last 800!

they were at about 1436 or so for the 5k...
split up into two main packs after that--bairu, eagon, nelson, lockhart, hoerr, olinger, vega, mazzoco off the back...nelson and bairu were trading lead duties every few laps
then they picked it up a bit and started dropping people...olinger refusing to take the lead...olinger and bairu broke away and then with about 3.5 laps left olinger made a huge move...bairu caught up and olinger went again and didnt look back
olinger 28:45.69 i think...about .25 off the big10 record
bairu 29:00
nelson
hoerr?
mazzoco had a great last two laps to close
vega?
ealy?
eagon?
lockhart was 9th i think
olinger looked like he wasn't trying...stayed right on bairu's shoulder the whole time--great move, i think bairu was surprised that olinger went so early, but things started to look pretty well finished as olinger started to open his lead
left before the girls race started because it started raining harder
FYI: the dude i thought was eagon must have been ford
My coach brought up a good point on the way back from the meet. It is much easier for Gary to coach one great kid every couple years at OSU, but Schumacher has to coach 6-7 studs every year. It's much easier to only have to coach one guy and not have the pressure of performing like Jerry has.
Bobby Lockhart did terrible, i mean he cure easily run 14:30 for the 5k in high school, why is he running this timed makes no sence
Hopefully he was shutting down after realizing he wasn't in scoring position or on pace for a NCAA mark. I belive he is also on the start list for the 15 and 5k - so there may have been some energy management concerns.
Do you think he is the only runner in the field that ran off??? Did he look really bad finishing??? From the results I can only speculate... If you were there and can shed some light on to how the race unfolded - great! Otherwise keep your bashing to yourself...
The real story here is the GREAT run by Olinger - give that cat some credit!!! Hope he has some gas left in the tank for the steeple and 5k. Should be some great races in the next two days!
Well, you did just as poorly in your attempt to write a coherent message. You should've been writing better than that before you reached high school!

I agree coaching a lot a quality runners, with their individual styles, has to be more difficult than just focusing on one or two. But the NCAA champion lost to a steepler. I hope he's a little off right now and wasn't saving it for a double because I bet Olinger is doubling back in the steeple as well.
Then again, this is just conference. If he's doubling 5/10 Jerry might have told him to lay back and don't overextend. Its all about scoring points in a conference meet.
With regionals now I expect conference efforts to be a little conservative with the guys gunning for top finshes at NCAA's. If this was a true end of season final I would be surprised with Olinger putting 15 seconds on Bairu in a 10k.
However, its a testament to Gary's coaching. That kid is fit. People were harping on his early season steeple opener and wonderring why it was only 8:45 but clearly he's ready to turn it on now and just starting to gain steam, which is what is appropriate for a guy who's pointing towards June and July and ready to run with the big dogs.

I think this post is a little misleading in two ways. First, calling Olinger "a steepler" isn't giving him enough credit; he is a runner, plain and simple. He's good at running around a 400m oval many times very fast, with or without barriers. Very good at it, in fact.
Secondly, calling Bairu "the NCAA champion" is, while true, a red herring of sorts in this context. Is he the NCAA champion at 10k on the track? No. He's the NCAA champion for XC. That's a whole different ball game.
Olinger could potentially win the steeple, 5k, or 10k at NCAAs if things (and not even all that many things) went his way. Obviously, Bairu losing to him by 15 seconds isn't a great sign, but I don't think it indicates that Bairu is "a little off." Rather, it just shows that Olinger has progressed into being a huge stud. I can't wait to see what he'll do at NCAAs and over the summer.
wait,,, who won the 10k at NC's last year then?

there was no conservation of energy going on here. Wisconsin thought they were going to do a little tempo run and go 1-4. In cross country they did it at conference with 7 in the top 12. Olinger and Solinsky are the 2 best track distance guys in the Big 10. However, in cross country Bairu is just as ahead. I also remember Coach Gary getting blasted for Olinger at Penn; give Rob some credit, Olinger's breakthrough race came late last summer after long seasons of All-Americans in cross country and indoor track. I think he knows how to get an athlete ready to "run with big boys" in the steeple.
You Ohio State guys sure are a bunch of pricks.

1. There is no 10,000 in regionals. It's time qualifying for NCAAs.
2 "Just conference" is what it's all about for coaches. Wisco won't win NCAA track, so winning the Big Ten is the big bragging right to be gained here for their coach. No way were they holding back for regionals or for Zurich or anything else. OK, Bairu might have jogged it in, maybe could have run 5 seconds faster, but he still got soundly defeated.
This is kind of a false argument...First off Being at a school like wisconsin has other benefits. Like runners to run with every day and in each workout...other runners who know a great deal about running...Or a coach who isn't an athlete himself and can dedicate himself fully to his athletes. (I know that works the other way too as often having an athlete coach can benefit in other ways)
And since when does Gary only coach one good guy? Doesn't myers or one of those great 1500's train there? Jeff See sucks now? And like i said Gary also has to spend time on himself. THey might not have a huge stable of runners like Wisco, but they have more then one guy. And having multiple guys is not hard to develope training programs for. Coaches who really love their jobs enjoy doing that, and if he's making as much as they said he was on letsrun i doubt he has to work a side job.
If anything having multiple guys is an advantage. When you have like 3 good guys, and they all have different needs....someitmes it's hard to get them training together all the time while doing what's best for them. But when you have 15 guys, who maybe have 6 unique needs, there's always someone you can pair up.

that sounds like sour grapes or something sour. I don't think Olinger is a one man show. How would you like to work under Russ Rogers - let's see Schumacher do that and stay sane.
