Cabada is really good no doubt but come on, there's no way he could hang with Ritz. Ritz has run a faster 10k on the roads in a championship race (28:10 2005 US 10k Road Championships) than Cabada has evr run on the track (28:25). Ritz' best is 27:38 and if what we are hearing is true, he should be able to set a sizeable pr at Stanford with a good race. |

I'm just guessing like the rest of you, but I think you are underestimating Webb. Neither Ritz, nor Webb seems to be in top form right now, so I wouldn't be surprised to see either of them win, or both lose (who else is running?). I hope they both have a good race and I don't really care who wins as long as that happens. |

Wrong, sweetheart. No other world class miler would touch this race.

[/quote] Maybe not, but maybe Webb see's himself as a world class 5000 runner, who has good mile speed. In that case a 10k would be a great idea, especially considering he's never raced anything farther than 5k (at least to my knowledge)on the track before. IF he does run this race, that would tell me he thinks his long term potential lies in the 5k, and I would probably agree. |

Simple fact of the matter is that it will be a great race. Remember that Webb last year on his 5k opener sat on somebody and kicked the last 200 to win in 13:30. I think it would be safe to assume he has been working on his 10k rhythm and should be able to roll. On the other hand, Ritz had a good race this past weekend. If he is fit enough to "throw in a few 60 second laps", then I would think he could run a good 10k. If conditions are right, we could see some fireworks at the Cardinal Invite. |

Yeah, that sub-3:50 mile PR of his sure indicates that the 5k is probably his best event, doesn't it? His potential sure isn't in the 1500/mile. Webb is a world class miler. I've got no problem with him stepping up to 5k occasionally to test his strength. This 10k is exactly that...a test of his strength right now...he'll be running fast 1500m races at the end of the summer, not 10k's, so you guys can quit creaming your pants about it. |

Mottram ran the 10k here last year and he pretty much focused on 1500s and 5000s the rest of the year. seems like webb is doing the same thing. just testing his strength, i wouldn't read too much into it. |

maybe webb is just pacing?? |

Do you all remember last year when Webb and his coach stated that he has every intention of making the 5000 his focus in the next couple years? If he is still intent on that goal, then a few 10ks for strength wouldn't be a terrible idea. |

I don't think he would fly to california to pace ritz in a 10k |

Webb and Mottram is a good comparison. I think Webb saw what Mottram did last year and thinks he can do that too in the 5000. |

Along with Ritz and possibly Webb, look for Ian Dobson to run. He mentioned in an interview several months ago that a 27:30 at the Cardinal Invite would be his target. And, Ryan Hall may tag along as well. He mentioned after winter xc nationals that he is now receptive to running a 10k race, and sub-28 would be wonderful to him. As is usually the case, the men's 10k will be the feature race at the Cardinal Invite. Probably the only track meet in the U.S. where a 10k race is the flagship event drawing the crowds. Alani |

how bad is that Webb will step up to the 10k before Torres does, considering Torres is older and made for the marathon. |

I agree 100% with the Torres comment. Jorge, what up? |

Geb ran 3:31 for 1500 indoors. That's world class. Had he not already set world records in them, you would have told him to run that rather than the 5,000m and 10,000m. You should run the distance you're best at, not the shortest distance you can be somewhat competitive at. For the record, I think Webb can be world-class at both 5,000m and 1,500m. It's a good thing he's moving up now and not waiting until he's past his peak. |

I mentioned in a thread last month that Webb was going to be doing a 10000. All I can say is, some of you don't realize how good Webb is at longer distances and will run much better than you think he can. I guarantee he will be well under 28:00. Based on what I've heard, I am setting Webb's over/under at 27:20. I will bump this when it happens. |

Ritz will win this race in a sub-27:30 effort. |

If Webb is going to run this thing all out I see Ritz winning in 27:20 or so and Webb right about 27:30. Ritz will run a big PR and be in the vicinity of the AR, but no one will care b/c it's more impressive for a 1500m runner to run that fast. It would be like Ritz moving down to the mile and running 3:52 and losing to Webb. |

I think that the calendar still reads April. Webb has shown an interest in starting with a range of races as he works to get ready for Europe. This will NOT be a peak race for him. Last year he ran 13:30; do you expect him to tack a 13:50 or better on at the end of that this early? Maybe he can run under 27:20 but I would be VERY surprised if it happens in the next few days. |
