The Dettmans are, I believe, non-scholarship runners who decided to go to Oregon because they believe that their running will continue to improve. They are paying their own way. There is little question in my mind that they will get better, and with the class they are coming in with, there will be lots of good competition to help them do so. Certainly, they will come in with a good work ethic- and you should keep in mind that Newton is not the track coach at York and has not been for several years; thus, the mileage they run is assigned by either Stan Reddel or Charlie Kern. With Newton the miles come over the summer into fall.

Twins can work out: the Hausers did all right by Stanford.

Another intelligent letsrun post. I am not invested in how they do, but I believe that they will improve and that their work ethic is second to none. I got to see them both about 10 days ago, and I thought they looked very good. If you do not feel that they will improve, explain why; don't just shoot your mouth off because you dislike York.

There's no way. I can kick Acosta's ass and Galen Rupp could beat me (maybe not in a mile or an 800 but definetly in anything longer). The only reason he beat me at Nationals was that he was running on his home course (he had raced there 11 times and trained there every weekend) and he had his AJ Nation (a bunch of losers) cheering for him.

Who will thrive:

Klotz is the best recruit, most potential, hasn't over trained. Watch for him to blow up.

Acosta is a tough sob and wants it real bad. Also has to back up his talk....he will.

Harbor, I don't know as much about his training, but from what I know, 3:49 1500. I think he could potentially shine if he toughens up.

Ryan Waite, a below the radar recruit from Oregon with mountains of middle distance potential. Will be a stud at 800/1500.

Who will struggle:

Stoutenburg runs over 100 mile weeks, not much room to improve. We'll see. I don't expect much.

The Dettmans. Do I even have to talk about it. Same old story. They will burn out.

Tough to call:

The Mercados. I think they will be middle of the road. Could be solid contributors in XC.

No one ever mentions his name but there's a kid from tiny Oakridge, Oregon who, if he's still planning on attending Oregon, may end up being one of their best recruits. 2A school and only runs around 40 miles a week. Low 15s in cross and mid 8s for 3k. His name's Brad Taylor. I've seen the kid and he's going to improve a ton. That's just my 2 cents.

People said exactly the same thing about the Hausers are you're saying about Stoutenburg. 'Too much mileage, blah, blah, blah.' Vin actually prefers the high mileage guys since he feels they adapt to his system a little easier. Intensity leaves you less room to improves when compared with mileage.

When will people understand that it's not running 100 miles for a single week before you see the best results and it's not even running 100 miles a week for an entire year before you see your best results...it's after YEARS and YEARS of that type of training. Not much room to improve?!?! Give him a couple more years of training like that and then see where he's at.

Which is, of course, the same crap everyone says about York runners. I think high mileage runners will do fine under Lanana's system, so both the Dettmans and Stoutenberg should get better.

check out Andy Wheating on the USATF website, he has no track team and ran 14:45 at the Harvard invite this past winter. He is also going to Oregon.

Everyone knows that Vin likes to stockpile talent. Not necessarily to use, but to keep others from using it against him. He's probably the best recruiter in the NCAA at present.

As for who will do well and who won't, I don't know enough about these HS kids to really predict. If you want to get a sense though, take a look at the Stanford roster from say 1996 to 2003 and compare who did well (NCAA XC teams, qualifying in track) vs. how they placed at FL while in HS. Going purely by memory, I'm guessing that most of the guys who succeeded (Jimmerson, Hausers, Jennings, Riley, Hall, Dobson, etc.) were top 10 finishers at FL or a HS track stud like Stember. Those who didn't have the same level of success were the HS state champs who never featured much on the national stage during HS or maybe had one great day (McCalmon, Weldon, Williams, West, Thomas). (I've tried to post a link for back info about Stanford's XC teams so that you can independently backcheck my hastily written hypothesis.)

With that hypothesis and the little that I know about the HS scene these days, it seems that Acosta, Mercados, and Stoutenberg should all have solid college careers. I've never heard of the Dettmans before, so I think that they would get my vote to underperform relative to the program as a whole.

Eric Dettman: indoor this year 1.56, 4.18, 9.10

Matt Dettman: indoor this year 1.59, 4.18, 9.16

ED outdoor: 4.14

MD outdoor: 4.20

Neither have had a real challenge in the 3200 this spring, but I believe we will see some very good times at the Prospect Invite, which has 7 or 8 guys (not sure who is entering: Craven, Havel, Escareno, Luciano, Dettmans, Montgomery, Finley, etc.) who can potentially run sub 9.10, so it could go pretty fast.

Both were all state in xc the past 2 years. They are solid runners, not spectacular, but with great work ethics. They are the kind of runner who really can improve under Lanana, and as I noted earlier they are both paying their own way to run with him.
