Wind measurements were all over the map, so I don't know the conditions for this race, but it definitely surprised me!
That's good, especially early season with no race sharpness. But mimimum 2 seconds needs chopping before he's even medicore. Even 3 long seconds aren't enough to guarantee a USATF final. But if this is truly a start, then 47.81 is something to build on.

Seriously, he used to cruise to that in dual meets in high school. This goes to show just how ignorant Let's Run posters really are... 47.81 is only a pretty damn good high school time -- nothing more.

You're being too hard on us. We're just hoping it's a starting point after years of 99% inactive racing and spotty training. But yea, I'd say the chances are better that he won't hit 44.xx.
Sad thing is he had a little endurance in high school. If he kept working, he just may've had supreme (and unique) 800M AND 400M ability, though I never saw him run minus the '96 trials heats on TV.
I watched him run at Reggie Lewis indoors and Penn outdoors his senior year. Awesome power.
Interersting race at Penn though. Tight race after two runners and I believe Sulton M. ripped a 45mid 3rd leg to blow it wide open. Obea split 45.0 solo on the end.
Did he run 1:49 in hs?
I believe he ran 1:49 against Granville.

this was actually his second 400 in 2 days. he won the CSULA invite on 4/12

having watched him run MANY times in high school, i'm surprised "OB 42" wasn't written on his shoes-- i know if i was THAT talented, my sights would've bet set nothing short of gold medals and world records...

Obea was actually a junior that year.
I for one hope he can make a comeback. The guy was phenomenal. How many 1:49 runners can also go 10.4 in the 100? I think he even ran a sub-4:30 1600. Too bad he didn't go to college. He should have started training with HSI.

John Muir HS (Pasadena), 1997
Jucorie Tryon 48.0
Shaheed McCullough 49.8
Sultan McCullough 45.8
Obea Moore 45.1 (auto 45.08, they were clocking it)
3:08.72
If it were not for Shaheed's bum hamstring, this team would have broken the national record in that race. Moore and William Reed still have the fastest HS splits with 45.1.
My one story was from National Scholastic Indoors 1996 Boston, MA (reggie lewis cntr) one of my idiot temmates (Chamari)--keep in mind, we're from ny and they're from cali, so we don't ever see these guys; this was our first encounter with him-- asks Obea after the the 4x400 trials: "yo, why do you run so fast?"
and obea, in true fashion, no smile or anything, simply says, I run to Win. I go on to watch from a stance for the rest of that year at relays and to the following year. H.S. track and field was at its best then. Terrence was running crazy hurdle times and the milers Riley, et al were trying to go under 4:00. Maan, that was fun. Funny enough, i suffered the same kind of hamstring injury my senior year and never really fully recovered as i tried to run when not healthy.
I want to see obea come back and do some things, for sure. I still believe in him.
