TomM,
sorry about the tone of my response; i was trying to raise the point that you shouldn't attack what works for others any more than people attack what you think works (more moderate miles). and as i even stated in my own post (about 10-12 ago), i wouldn't have my own kids break 70/week.
so i think we're in agreement on that, and like greenliner, i'm glad someone makes us back up our beliefs, not just propagandize....
as for your other question: when i say i know a bunch of 100mpw runners, the fall into two categories, both of which "count" as 100mpw:
the guys who run 100mpw for many (>10) weeks in a row as part of base training, sometimes up to 115-20, and then maintain volume during season (~85-90).
the guys who average 100mpw for the whole year (excluding the 2-4 weeks they take completely off).
i think both qualify, because the initial topic was for SUMMER BASE only, so to claim i'm a 100miler because i ran one week is ludicrous, but if that is a staple of a major training period for someone, then they are.
and i don't go by yearly totals; when you factor in weeks off, taper weeks of ~40mpw, down weeks for recovery (say ~70), someone could run a great number of 100+ weeks and still average in the 80s.
