The NCAA track people have corrected their mistake and Mike Woods is now in the NCAA mile.

Here is an older thread on this if you wonder what I'm talking about: http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=1244296

As someone who is involved with the NCAA, the statement that the NCAA could screw anything up is far from the truth. The NCAA must set some basic, simple rules to live by. A meet must have 10 events to be called a sanctioned meet. How hard is this to accomodate? Track coaches, and meet directors are very bad at organizing so things like this don't happen. If there were not these simple rules, then you would have situations like in the 70's where a certain southern school would get together a bunch of decathletes, and whoa and behold, 5 NCAA qualifiers would come out their last chance meet. Bogus all the way. All the Pole Vault Summit, and the Boston Reebok Games had to do was attaach themselves to the same website, with the same entry procedure as the Silver State Games, and Northeastern Collegiate meet and all would have been rosy. How simple was that? These rules are so easy to abide by, but each year we have people that don't do it. And then everyone rails against the NCAA. The NCAA is not a perfect organization, but there a lots of good people that work their ass off to do a good job. All the NCAA was doing in this situation was trying to make sure that everyone who got into the meet was playing by the same rules. Do any of you out there really believe that all Division I colleges play by the same rules. Do you really think that things are the same at Michigan, and Mississippi Valley State University? The playing field is already tilted, and the NCAA is just attempting to protect the little guy. And if you look at the descending order list the Michigan runner who will get in, is probably going to push out a runner from one of the little schools who did it the right way.
Well...

Based on the time he ran, Woods deserves to be in the mile. In my mind, this is all that matters. I understand what you're saying, the rules serve a purpose, but the meet is well known. There is no way that he could have fabricated his time or anything like that.

One should keep in mind that the reason rules are written in the first place is because coaches don't want to compete on an even playing field (nothing new about that). As stated, there was a rash of "last chance" meets with bogus performances resulting in implementing of rules to rightfully protect those athletes who followed correct procedure in the first place. This particular issue is clear cut since the Boston Indoor Games is a very legitimate meet with qualified officials and legitimate competition. However, suppose Woods had done this in a meet in Altoona (sorry Altoona) on a suspect track with coaches timing the events? I recall one year where a major Division 1 women's 4x100 team ran against four male runners (two of whom were assistant coaches) to get a qualifying time for nationals. At the same meet coaches held an AM pole vault and then a PM pole vault for the same athletes to try and get athletes qualified.
They did it for the children....

Should a non-conforming meet be scrutinized? You bet.

If you are "someone who is involved with the NCAA," I assume that you are someone who is involved with education. If this is true, then you should learn how to spell. The word is "accommodate." Stop screwing up the English language. Thank you.
really now

Thank you for pointing out that my typing skills are somewhat suspect. Glad that you never bothered to weigh in on the topic intelligently. You should be proud of that.

Thank YOU!!!
