The 1500 at commowealths is going to be great. Sully, Brannen, Willis, Blincoe, Mottram, Fountain, McCormick, Baddely, Thie, 3 Kenyans: Haroun Kaitany, Jonathan Komen, Churchill Kipsang, Johan Cronge (3:35 guy)... I think Kenya could repeat what happened to them in Helsinki where they weren't really a factor in the final.
Hmmm! How many of those (1500m) guys have run under 3:32.00? I gues how great a field is must be relative.
And I guess those are the top 1500m Kenyan runners - hmmm!
Er.....Tyler Christopher???
One guy running the 5000? None running the 10 or marathon? Seems like there are a few spots which could be filled.

Who would fill them? A and B standards are: 13:21.50 and 13:34.92; 27:49.00 and 28:39.03; 2:14:20 and 2:18:00.
In the 5000 in 2005, only Coolseat, Sullivan and Benninger made B standard. That slot is filled (and I don't think he's even met the letter of the law when it comes to AC's repeat performance criteria).
In the 10,000 in 2005, only Bairu has B standard and he's got NCAA responsibilities.
In the marathon, no one has B standard.
I would say that Coolsaet coming second at World University Games would constitute a repeat performance. Not an exceptionally fast time (13:39) but it was hot and a tactical race.
this is how the 1500 will break down:
1. nick willis
2. craig mottram
3. nate brannen

Its still going to be a great race despite the lack of sub 3:32 guys. You can have a great race between eight 4:10 1500m runners, as long as its competitive it can be a great race. Also, I already alluded that the Kenyans going to Commonwealth aren't their top ones.
- hmmm ! - hmmm! - hmmm ! you're annoying.

I'm not at all suggesting he shouldn't be going. Simply pointing out the idiocy of the 'repeat performance' criteria that say the 5000m folk must run an A and a B during the qualifying period (don't believe he has).

Because we didn't reach our alloted quota after the A standard athletes were selected the following part of the selection criteria comes into play.
3.4 “B” STANDARD SELECTION PROCESS – Rising Star Criteria
STAGE 3
3.4.1 Athletes from the Eligibility Pool among the Top-4 finishers at the Qualifying Trials who have achieved the Athletics Canada “B” standard in that same event as per the Repeat Performance Schedule (Appendix “B”) may be nominated to the team subject to the objectives and principles outlined in Section 2.0. The NTC will consider the objectives and principles outlined in Section 2.0 in order to determine, in their sole discretion, whether such athletes may be selected to the team as “Rising Star” / “B” standard achievers.
3.4.2 Rising Star athletes, who are eligible for selection as outlined in Section 3.4.1, will be considered using the following evaluation principles. These principles are not ranked in priority order. The NTC in its expert opinion has full responsibility, sole discretion and final authority for athlete selection under the Rising Star Selection Process.
• Order of finish results within the same event at the Trials
• Evaluation of training environment
• Compliance with the Competitive Readiness Requirements of Section 5.0 of this Document
• World Rank based on the most current IAAF world rankings (top lists) and on a conversion of the average of their required performances as per the Repeat Performance Schedule (Appendix “B”) and expressed as a percentage of the “Podium” standard using the IAAF scoring tables.
• Performance relative to age and performance progress will be considered
• Commonwealth rank based on the most current Commonwealth rankings as at September 19th and a conversion of the average of their required performances as per the Repeat Performance Schedule (Appendix “B”) and expressed as a percentage of the “B” standard using the IAAF scoring tables.
• Attendance in pre-Commonwealth Games camp starting on March 5th (for 4x100m relay team members); March 9th (for all athletes except those on the Moscow team who will be expected to arrive March 13th) is a mandatory requirement for selection.
3.4.3 After athletes have been selected as per 3.3, remaining spots will be filled by athletes nominated for selection in rank order as determined by the NTC as per Section 3.4.2 up to the maximum allowable number of athletes as determined by CGC (final quota number to be determined following the Helsinki World Championships).
3.5 Other Criteria
3.5.1 If after athletes have been selected as per 3.4 and there are still remaining spots on the team, Athletics Canada’s National Team Committee reserves the right to rule on an appropriate course of action to select more athletes to fill any remaining team spots. Such “wild card” selection of athletes may be made from among undeclared athletes, or athletes who achieve the standard outside the stated Qualifying Period, or who achieve the standard in related events indoor. Such selection selection of athletes are made strictly subject to available team spots; subject to international and Commonwealth Games Canada entry regulations; and may be selected on a self-funded basis.
Thanks for the clarification. I'll admit to not having read the entire criteria (but the fact that one can't just look at the table of standards and easily figure out who is eligible is a continuing bone of contention).
I also see the COC is perpetuating the two tiered 'everyone is equal but some are more equal than others' line of thinking with:
"...and may be selected on a self-funded basis."
I'm a 52 year old Aussie Accountant and am on a farm ~230kms north of Melbourne. I live up here with my wife & 21 year old son but have a 3 bedroom unit in East Brunswick (which is about 2-3 kms from the village you're staying in).
My daughter lives there and I stay there when doing accounting work in Melbourne (tops of 1 or 2 nights per week) but she's off to London on Tuesday (14th) so the unit will be empty.
I was so embarrassed yesterday when reading the article that you guys had to hire fans because the faceless officials were too tight to instal airconditioning in your rooms; yet there's plenty of cash for the opening ceremony!!; wondered whether some of your team might like to stay in the unit (it does have airconditioning!!). I don't want money for it or anything, just thought it'd be better than trying to sleep when it gets hot again.
Contact me if you're interested ,I'll be coming to Melbourne on Monday.
Regards, Bruce.
