My coach insists that anyone that trains on a treadmill is not really running and that it shouldn't count in our mileage. I occasionally will run a morning run on a treadmill, but I always end up feeling guilty.

Don't feel guilty. Set the incline at a high % and you get a hill workout.
Coaches are chained to their beliefs.
I understand the coach even though I don't agree. Mileage is mileage and if you are running, it counts. However, treadmill is a crutch and should only be used in rehab work. It should NEVER be used to duck inclimate weather. That includes the entire east coast right now.
I bet Brandon Moen thinks it counts.
Could this be the real guy or is it just some one under his name? If so they went out of their way to become a memeber. Be sure to read the second page of the thred.
tell your idiot coach that dr. christine clark, from achorage, ak, trained on a treadmill and won the olympic trials marathon in 2004.
2000, i mean.
She was training on a treadmill for a specific purpose. She was trying to simulate the heat that was going to be in Columbia SC. It was for that reason only.

Ignore your coach. Problem solved
how old is your coach? just cause they're a coach doesn't mean they're right. imagine the kids who were molested by preists. I wonder if those kids thought it was okay to be diddled?
Hi, my name is Barry, and I used a treadmill today.
Though, I mainly did it because I am injury prone and didn't want to mess with the ice....more from a fear of straining my stability muscles than from a fall.
Anyway, I've heard this rumor that treadmill running is "easier" because the belt actualy assists your legs by "throwing" them back.
As an engineer I've always found that amusing. These people obviously don't know Newton's 1st Law of Motion. The belt doesn't "throw" your legs back anymore than the Earth's rotation does......which is ZERO!
Anyway, if treadmill mileage doesn't count, then run for 4 hours on the treadmill at max speed the morning before a race and see how well you run. If it doesn't "count," then you should be well rested before your race.

Running and treadmill running are different. I would argue that treadmill running can count as a form of training, as can aqua jogging, but I would say that treadmill or elliptical "miles" can not be counted as part of a weekly total

why not? don't just give us your opinion.
I believe that there is direct proportion of treadmill running to the decline of elite american distance running. In the 70's I did not know of anyone that would run on a treadmill. By the way, what is the treadmill running like in Kenya? We have become high tech sissy's. Just run.
The phrase is actually "Just run baby." Thank you very much.
i would argue that it's indoor track season, therefore i guess running on the road can count as a form of training, but it's really not like running on a 200m banked track, so it probably shouldn't really count toward weekly mileage...i mean just think about all the stabilizing muscles you have to use when avoiding cars, running on a crowned road, runing through snow drifts, and over ice. i think it's safe to say that treadmill running should be used exclusively as the mode of training from dec-march as training indoors allows for better acclimitization for those hot, dry indoor facilities...

I would argue you are an idiot.
I think running on a treadmill is harder. I was visiting my sister this past weekend and got up to do a quick 6 miler before the rest of the family woke. It was raining and I really didn't want to get my long hair soaking wet because it takes a while to dry it. (We were in a hurry to get to a Karate tournament that morning). So I hopped on their treadmill. At only 1/4 of a mile I had enough. Maybe it is mental, but I was going to go crazy running on that thing. So I headed outside and had a great fast tempo run. The pace I held outside was faster than what I was doing on the treadmill. Does anyone else feel that way about a treadmill?
