I'm going to start taking Karate lessons and I'm wondering how long it takes to get a black belt. I know the degrees of black belt is what really matters, but how long does it take to get to a black belt?

Perhaps 4 years. My son does Tang Soo Do Karate and this Wednesday he got his red belt (one belt under black) after 2.5 years. Since he's got 3 levels of red belt to go through, he's got about another 1.5 years until black belt.
I want to be able to defend myself and my family. Is Karate the way to go or some other form of Martial Arts?
guns?
your looking at it all wrong!....besides you are the type that will get yourself hurt or beat-up after getting your black belt!....
to answer your question.....depends on the instructors....some 1 year.....some 5 years?....
I have seen yellow and brown belts that are a lot better than black belts based on the quality of the programs....but if you must have a black belt as ASAP....I sure you can find some overnight program to fit your needs!
Who said anything about getting it overnight? Did I say rush it anywhere?
Thanks for the advice on the different programs.
It shouldn't take long, every 8 year old in the suburbs has a black belt.
To correctly get a blackbelt by obtaining the discipline of strength and mind I would say 10+ years. To get a blackbelt just to have a black belt where in reality all you have is the ability to do a couple kicks, then 2-4 years.
Keep paying your money and you will get your belt! it's all I joke. it's great for young kids, but if you want to learn how to fight find a real trainer. What do you need a belt for. Most fights go to the ground anyways.
I have a black belt in Tang Soo Doo. Karate is a good way to build self discipline and get a descent workout, but most forms will not teach you how to really fight. I've seen 8 year olds get black belts. I've seen adults who couldn't deffend themselves from a retarded midget get black belts. There is actually alot of money to be made from karate so they make it easy enough to appeal to non-athletes and pass people along because they are paying money. I'd recomend jeet kun do (sp?) if you want to learn self defense. That seems to be a much more physical, fighting oriented form.

GHB (or sgh, whatever you call yourself) you and Not Jake Lamotta must like rubbing each others groin. There is nothing wrong with "every 8 year old in the suburbs" taking Karate. What would you rather have them doing? riding skateboards on your frontyard fence.
Karate is a great, even for young kids. Those who are serious will keep it going, long after that black belt is wrapped around their waist. They'll maintain and add to the discipline, strength, and mindset. Hopefully it will keep them from posting on LetsRun.com

You can't pull out a gun on the street and blow someone away because he says something to your gf, nutjaws.

Who's going to stop him? Not me and my black belt, dandruff-infested, weary self.
I strategically leave my entire set of golf clubs hidden through out the house. The no.3 driver just inside the door, and the sand wedge in the boot of my car if I feel a case of road-rage coming on.
Don't take up karate, just spend that money on a good set of golf clubs.

Oh, but you can throw a flying drop kick on him? Shut the hell up. They guy was talking about defending himself and his family, not striking back when someone talks mean to him. There's a big difference.
yeah, bitch, you can do some serious f***ing damage to someone with Karate. You can defend yourself and your family quite well with it. I'm pretty sure he meant while outside the home or else he would just get a gun or something else.
You're an idiot.
Use the crane kick and people will be dropping like flies, its like a martial arts machine gun.
Trust me, I KNOW KARATE (and seven other chinese words).
i think training like an ultimate fighter would be not just a workout, but also prepare you to beat someone down if they screwed with your family.
