track and field news is reporting alan webb will skip indoor track this year, he will run a cross country race on sunday and also the following sunday, his competition will include gebremariam and lebed, the article says he will run the 4k at the usa championships, but will probably not race in the world championships april 1-2 in japan, so he can work on running fast on the track circuit this year.
He better go sub 3:30 this year then.

I really don't understand him not running World XC. He can probably make the team & not peak for it (as long as he doesn't have another spike incident). Plus he would do best in the 4k & we all know that is going away soon.

Look at other milers of his quality, not many run world xc. Sullivan is an exception.
You're right that most top milers don't run XC, but I 100% agree with Webb's decision (except for skipping WC XC).
Just strength alone can take you a long way for 1500m. Ask Geb. I'm definitely a believer of XC helping the track runner more than an indoor season.
It's refreshing to see American runners taking this approach. Train train train....screw indoors, when you know you'll be battling it out at the Big Summer Meets. Webb is going to KILL this year.

agreed - smart move, but I don't think that he has anything to apologize for - I love a racer who goes out and gets after it, in the end he'll be the better for it
It's a smart move and all, and I'm all for it. Just I'd be more stoked if it were a championship season. Being as there's no Olympics or WC I'd say he's got nothing to lose. Unless he's got the WR in mind( I doubt it anytime soon, but more power to him if it is )I'd say go for the xc champs.
I am just curious as to why you think a winter XC season serves a runner as a better method of preparation than an indoor season would? You can do the same workouts as you would for strength for XC but just do a few limited indoor races. I don't think it is a matter of which season you run as it is more a matter of how you approach the season. I just wonder why you and others feel XC is vastly superior for preparation than indoors? By the way, there is no malice or sarcasm here, just a simple question.
TRUST ALLEN WEBB to be doing the best thing for his running. That guy has courage seldom seen in an American runner. He races. He takes the lead. He plans strategy for races and for seasons. He knows what he needs to do to get where he wants to go.

This business of Webb skipping indoors is not exactly news. It has been known for a couple of months.
There is a WC this year.....INDOORS. I get the impression that some on the board don't take it seriously, but many of the top runners in the world will be there....no question.

When someone races long distance on challenging terrain up & down hills (cross country), I think it physically helps that person's ability to race strong in ways that distance runs, or indoor races, don't address.
