Last Night in Geelong the evergreen Steve Moneghetti broke the World Record for the Over 40's 1 hour run. The old record of 19,149m was held by Jozef Eyckmans of Belgium which he ran in 1996. Moneghetti started off on a windy day, with only a few runners to go with him early. After the pacemaker (Paul Morgan) dropped out after getting Moneghetti on pace, he was left with Magnus Michleson, and former OSU Cowboy Scott Rantall. Magnus busted out an early lead, and then Moneghetti went on the chase after about 25 mins. Moneghetti caught up to Michelssson, and then they raced for a few km's. After 12km's Moneghetti put in a bit of pace, and ran 5 laps at 71 sec pace to break away. With 10 mins to go Moneghetti was thoroughly enjoying the moment, with the crowd's excitement he was running past with thumbs up and fists pumping, and pointing to the Australian singlet he was wearing. It was an awesome atmosphere for the last 20 mins, and everyone was on their feet cheering. Moneghetti who is 43 years old smashed the World Record by over 500m, running about 19.7km (unofficial). Michelsson held on well and the 37 yr old ran on to get to the 19.5km mark, an awesome effort considering the windy conditions the runners had to put up with early in the hour.
After finishing Moneghetti jogged around with a bunch of kids running behind him, in true Rocky Balboa style. A great moment for a guy who has gone on to run incredibly well into his 40's. The night was to mark the moment that Ron Clarke broke the world hour and 20km record on the same track 40 years ago, and he was in attendance with fellow legends John Landy, and Rob Decastella to watch Moneghetti smash a World Record himself.
