zepdog, about how long does it take her to get to work in the morning? I looked it up and midtown looks pretty good, but i can imagine that driving through downtown in the morning would be hell. |

Seconded, Memorial Park loop is way overrated. Hell it's NOT even an accurate 3 mlies. I never run there, much better places. One of the best kept secrects is Allen Parkway/Hersey Park. You guys know what I'm talking about if you've ran there. |

I work up at Exxon in Greenspoint too. Midtown is a great place to live (a lot of my coworkers are there) and the morning outbound commute is typically around 15-20 minutes. Outbound traffic in the morning and inbound traffic at night is really not that bad although it is getting worse. Going the other way is pretty tough though. I myself live down in the Rice/West University area, and my commute up to Greenspoint is ~30min in the morning and around 45min at night, mainly due to construction on Hwy 59. |

Some earlier poster said that most of the domiciles around Memorial Park are houses. This is true, but in an area using Memorial Park as the west border, Memorial Drive as the south, I-10 as the north and Sabine to the east, the entire area is exploding with apartments and townhouses. You can find something good, believe me. As a final note: If you cannot go to Memorial Park just to enjoy the "scenery", come out of the closet. You will be much happier. Houston also has one of the largest alternative populations in the country, but I think if your statements identify to my previous sentence, you already know that. |

Since I will be moving to Houston this summer for at least 4 years, I thought I would bump this thread for some new information I will be moving down to Houston (dont know what area I will be working in yet) and my gf will be going to U of Houston for opt school. We are wondering what neighborhoods to look for an apartment in? We would like to stay at 1000/month or under if possible. Some things about us: I would like to continue to train in the middle distances, coffee shops/cafes would be great, etc |

Dallas is a "concrete ghetto", with emphasis on the word concrete. |

I hate to break it to you, but it's not the greatest place in the world. Angry drivers, misplaced Katrina victims, 30k millionaires, and rich people with major chips on their shoulders abide here. You might need to spend a bit more than $1000, if you want something safe and solid. Your longer runs will be flat and monotonous. There is a great track at Lamar high school though. Narrow four lanes with very little wind. Reminds me of the old bislett track. I hope you have a better experience here than I did. |

Houston sucks man. Bad traffic, bad people, pompous runners, WIC wealthy. The high school tracks are primarily off-limits, bayou trail is infested with bums, memorial park is a d-bag hangout/ pickup arena, and Terry Hershey park is dominated by angry cyclists claiming their territory. There are also a lot of mexicans. |

Thank you for the encouraging words about the city but we're going there anyways. I am less concerned about what paths/trails to run on as I am about choosing the best neighborhood to live |

Live in the woodlands, Katy, kingwood if you are looking for suburban living. The heights & bellaire if your budget can afford it and you are looking for city living |

For everything that you mentioned (gf at UH, training, $1000/rent), I would consider looking for an apt. around the Med Center. I pay $1000 for a 750sq ft one bedroom apartment in a very modest complex, and have been very satisfied for the three years that I have been here. I'm 5 min from Rice, and about 15min from UH, and hardly ever have to deal with interstate traffic. Houston definitely has its share of sketch characters, but I havent had any issues. |

If you can't get into the 5th Ward, then try the 4th Ward. Should be plenty of houses available in that price range, very central location, and your gf can walk to school. |

I check letsrun bored waiting for meat to finish on the grill and I see this. As usual lots of haters on this board. Hcm trails are nothing like that. Anycase, Houson has its good and bad. You can find the good and avoid the bad. Reread my recs still relevant six years later. |
