Bairu, Boit, Wisconsin, or Arkansas who will win Men's TEAM & Indivdiual X titles? 10/30/2005 1:03PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
It seems that two of the heavy favorites for the individual title are also members of the top two teams vying for the Team title: Simon Bairu (Wis) and Josphat Boit (Ark). Can young Josh McDougal or Robert Cheseret displace the two juggernauts from their goal atop of the NCAA X-Country podium?

While there are a few individuals who can create a mild surprise by winning the individual title the team title seems destined for Wisconsin or Arkansas's trophy mantle. Colorado have been solid this season but isn't in the category of Arkansas or Wisconsin. Will Wisconsin finally fulfill its promise and win the X-Country title or will it be another Arkansas hoop la ring a ding hear the hogs sing?

In the end it may very well be Wisconsin's title to win or lose again as their 4th, 5th, and 6th guys are slightly better than the Hogs.

Bairu looked very strong winning the Big 10 today...25 seconds in front of Solinksy...boy those WI boys are tough:

boit will win if conditions are good (track like, hard and fast) If its slow and muddy conditions are bad, Mcd and bairu will battle for the W, ill give the edge to mcdougal on that one.

I wasnt at the meet but just looking at the times I doubt that the top Wisco kids were all out. lets be honest if Withrow were all out then eagon wouldnt be within a few seconds.

I was at the meet and to me all the WI boys looked "all out". Withrow is just getting healthy again and Eagon had the race of his life. Bairu looked very very strong...he just costed in with a strong time in the damp conditions. Solinsky could've been faster if pushed....

I wasn't there either, but I would think those guys were running all out. They were out quick in 2:49 for 1K and 8:42 at 3K. Now the question is whether the fast start took its toll and they slowed down or if they relaxed the last 3K and chilled. I would think they ran pretty hard the whole way. That's how they usually treat Big 10s, then they chill at Regionals. In the menracing Withrow interview, he indicated that the guys were preparing for a fast start at Nationals with the way Arkansas has been running this fall (Boit and Forrest out in the low 4:20s at Chile Pepper). It looks like they were practicing that here on the fairly tough Griak course.

Not too surprised to see Withrow just in front of Eagon. In fact, Eagon was a few seconds ahead of him at 5K. Withrow is probably in great shape but this is his first real all-out race in about 6 months since his 13:35 5K at Stanford last spring. I'm sure he's been doing some real hard workouts but racing is a different animal, and I'd bet he was hurting there in the middle of the race. I expect him to be closer to Bairu at Nationals in three weeks time.

individual title goes to Josh Mcdougal, is that first time right? Either way, Mcdougal will win.

McDougal couldn't beat Boit or Bairu under any conditions. Get real.

Boit and the Hogs rock the house.

To tell you the truth, the only runner who did not look like he was going all out was bairu. Withrow had a good kick at the end to pass eagon. it was a fun race to watch. Also, the conditions were really pretty good, the course was not muddy at all, and only a little soft.

As much as the God squad would love for McDougal to win, he will be fortunate to finish top 3.

If Bairu was actually saving some at Big 10's, which I would hope that he was, he seems to be looking very strong. If all the runners of Arkansas and Wisconsin run to their potential, I believe Wisconsin will have the team title, however, as we all know, its all about what you bring on race day. Individually, the winner will be Simon Bairu. Top 5 finishers:

1. Simon Bairu
2. Josphat Boit
3. Josh McDougal
4. Robert Cheseret
5. Chris Solinsky

In the end it will be Arkansas. Wisconsin doesn't have the guns to go with Arkansas. They also don't have the coach. McDonnell makes a huge difference. It is frustrating to see the Midwest falter year after year.

Wagensteen your NUTS. Arkansas BLEW up like LEMMINGS last year so don't give us that BULL. People gave Wisconsin a rough time for losing a close one but it was the HOGS that choked HUGE. It's gonna be close but I'll give the nod to Wisconsin. There is something about losing a close one and then coming back to make up for it that gives Wisconsin the edge. I guarantee Wisconsin will be ready for anything this year and the "talk" before the race is going to be a good one from Schumacher. It's gonna be cold and wet and muddy and that plays right into Wisconsin and Colorado again. I can't see any way that course is going to be hard and fast.

Wow, you can predict the weather almost a month in advance. At the previous NCAA meet held at Terre Haute before this past year the weather was very good. The average high is 50 degrees, which is not cold and the record high is 68 degrees. They do not usually have snow at that time of year and November is not a huge rain month, so it could very easily be hard and fast. Yes it could be cold and wet and muddy, but the odds are just as good for decent weather and a fast course.
