Do people seriously wash their running shoes? Who came up with that? The only benefit of washing your shoes is for the shoes companies because washing them wrecks them and you have to buy a new pair sooner!

I have washed my shoes as long as I have been wearing them--15 years.
When I used to play soccer my cleats would smell like this. We always thought it was the fertilizer that they used on the fields. If you have run through a maintained grassy area, this may be it.

Great anatomy lesson, never has anyone been more wrong about anything, it is the shoe not anatomy, New Balance 99 series stinks of urine when they get wet, Go USA craftmanship,
Well, the chemistry of your glue theory is EXACTLY what Jennifer explained. She is totally right about excess ammonia in sweat. And if New Balance uses urethane adhesives, guess what... there's the building blocks of an amino acid in there, and the possibility of ammonia from the breakdown. So, yes, you're right, but it is not the only explanation.
Frankly, Jennifer's explanation is just as likely if not more. The fact that YOUR sweat doesn't smell like that doesn't mean that it can't be sweat. It's just anecdotal evidence.
Science. Don't they teach kids science anymore?
Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda in them and leave them outside for a few hours. The baking soda should neutralize the ammonia smell.

Gawd, she was tedious , a reason I hate chicks like that and failed chemistry.
