Do you honestly believe food is the reason Bolt, as a 16 year old teenager, roughly the same age as most high school sophomores, ran faster than Wariner, a 22 year old young adult, roughly the same age as college seniors?

In other words, do you believe that if you ate the same food as Usain Bolt did, and trained the same way as he did the first 16 years of your life, lived the exact same way as him, you would be able to run 20.16 ?

Obviously it is not possible, but I'm sure if it were that easy, I'm sure other Jamaicans would've tried the same time.

There are plenty physiological differences between a 16 year old and a 22 year old. I don't doubt that, however, I do doubt that it is a result of training. We're talking about the same man that coached a number of individuals to 200m world titles, and while they haven't been eating the same food, they arent the same individual. As technologically advanced a society as the United States been, we know what just about every food item does to your body. I'm sure

I stated Wariner played football as a youth to show that Wariner and Bolt have similar athletic backgrounds (Bolt played cricket) so there should be no reason why Bolt should be running faster than Wariner.

Theres a reason why people like Bolt only come around so often.

Man, my training and diet were so messed up in High School. I ran in the 4:50's in the 1600 and that Webb guy ran 3:53 because of his superior training methods. I was eating them fruits, vegetables, and grains, but I probs should have had better nutrition, man. It's all about believing--anything is possible! You have to believe that you can drop a minute in the mile even though you've been training hard for years.

Ok, I can't keep it up. You do know that Flo-jo tried to be an olympian distance runner, trained hard, and did 21 or so for the 5K? Man, her training must have been REALLY bad. She could have dropped 6 minutes to be closer to the elites--it's all about training and diet.

Obviously you werent a great sprinter cus you didnt eat Jamaican food. You might have the world record if you ate and trained like Usain Bolt.

Who knows exaclty how much genetics play a part. But let's not pretend that the Bekele brothers and Dibaba sisters just happen to be better than lots and lots of runners who train really, really hard. Their families seem to respond well to training.r

Well that's certainly NOT the case. We know for a fact that Bekele was at least as slow as 8:09 for 3k at a point in his career (1999). And that was with training. There's no way he would have obliterated me. Again, that was with training. So he would have been even slower without training.

My parents never ran. Their complete lack of sporting interest and the rest of the family was a mystery to me and made me want to be completely different.

Well, there you go. You said it yourself. If all you were eating was fruit, vegetables, and grains then that was probably a huge reason for your shortcomings. Training for the 1500 is strenuous and so very much requires that you get adequate protein. I don't see you getting adequate protein from fruits, vegetables, and grains.

Dont you think arguably the greatest long sprint coach of all time knows just a little bit about training and nutrition? Do you think that the food they eat in Jamaica can only be found in Jamaica? Like America isn't an advanced society with supermarkets and the ability to import foods?

A very warm climate like Jamaica is ideal for sprinting. Though, parts of Texas wouldn't be so bad either.

In any case, what makes it obvious that genetics is a factor, is looking at entirely different species. Genetics explains why bats can fly and cheetahs can sprint the speed of cars commuting down the highway.

Some of my parents were fast, and some of them were not.

My mother wasn't a runner at all. My father was a "jogger" in the 70s and was never fast...he never even entered a race.

My kids though are on a track to be faster than I was (relatively faster for my daughter), and that's quite a thing.

My dad ran 40:40 for 10k and my mon ran 28:20 for 5k.

I ran 31:38 for 10K.

My son is 16 and runs low-17's for 5k.

I think I outperformed my poor genetics. Some of you guys don't know how fortunate you really are.

has many references to medical/science studies. In summary the combination of alleles (genes) you inherit will determine your outward characteristics (phenotypes) for example lung volume which obviously has an effect upon your maximum potential for distance running.

Your genes not only determine your athletic ability/characteristics such as slow/fast twitch muscle composition before training, but also determine your response to training. For example

Person A has less than average natural speed and is slower than Person B who has above average natural speed. They are both untrained

They both go to the same track club and are trained by the same coach in sprints

Person A has inherited a combination of alleles which mean he responds highly to training, Person B although naturally quick has inherited alleles which determine he does not/responds lowly. For this reason Person A becomes faster than Person B.

An elite athlete would generally be someone who has inherited high natural ability together with high response to training, both combined with the right mindset, training, nutrition etc.

You cannot make an elite athlete out of someone with average genetics as just as much as you cannot make an elite athlete out of someone who has done zero training.

Other than my brother who follows me into doing XC and track, I have absolutely no parents or relatives who ran or even remotely liked running. They can't even trot for more than 10 seconds without stopping. They would only take light strolls in the park
