Those exist?!
Why does everyone always say they should hire Beck? What has he done? Anything? He was at Fredonia for two years, big whoop. People need to stop riding him, like he is this great coach.
zing!
I guess in this case "a couple" means 14 consecutive T&F sectional championships, 6 consecutive XC sectional championships, a State championship in XC, and numerous individual State champions. You can be a hater because he left Fredonia after 6 months, but give him credit for his accomplishments.
Question: Who wouldn't leave Fredonia and the financial limitations of a SUNY program, for the new Fisher program that had more pay, great private funding (Polisini Family), and new $4m outdoor facility. He signed Cohen before anyone else recognized the kids talent, and worked as hard at recruiting than any coach you know. The other D3 coaches in NY knew it was a matter of time before he built Fisher into a legit program. He made a terrible personal decision and he will pay dearly for it, but the dude was a good coach.
Re: Garger - what goes around, comes around. Once a scumbag, always a scumbag. I can't stop laughing. He's done as a college coach, and most likely as a high school coach and teacher too. Serves him right.
The problem wasn't that he left Fredonia for Fisher. It was that he let Fredonia's Athletic Department fund his trip to Texas to become USATF certified, then turned around and left immediately after that semester taking all the recruiting material with him. Recruiting material that was the property of the Fredonia program, in order to start his program at Fisher. Do you not see the moral dilemma in that? No one is arguing that he shouldn't have gone to Fisher, except now for the Fisher Athletic Department and probably that girl's parents, they were arguing that he's a scummy person with a shit stained soul. Granted they were also arguing that he's a bad college coach. However, all the evidence supports that he is in fact a terrible college coach. He was good at Geneseo HS but if you ask any of his athletes, I'm sure they will tell you that it was their assistant that really made that program sing, and that will hopefully help pull Fisher out of this rut that he's dug them into, within one half of one year.
To add to that, he planned on leaving Fredonia the whole time. People knew that before he left for Fredonia. He kept his family in Geneseo waiting for him to start coaching up in Rochester.
Funny that when several Fredonia athletes went to the AD to ask why Beck wasn't made head coach after the great interim stint he said they were looking for a "family man."
Nailed it.
@ Breakdown - nailed it.
@ platlex - not completely accurate. Garger kept promising to move his family after the first year and even carried on a charade of looking at houses in Fredonia during his short time there. In reality though he was just BSing everyone, so you kind of nailed it.
@ Former Devil - unfortunately, Beck had issues too. Potential to be a very good coach. Suspect maturity and his own shenanigans with the athletes too could not be overlooked.
I am still amazed at how so many young coaches today think it is OK to hang out with, drink with and even date your current college athletes. Complete insanity.
Oh please. All you need to do that in class D is 5 10:55-11:20 girls. To get that good a runner, all you need is a few regular athletes to come out for the team and run, regardless of training quality. All you need to get those girls to come out for the team, is to sleep with them and make them fall in love with you.so, i guess he nailed the formula.

So much for the rediculous notion that he would not run and train for outdoors instead.
All Garger did in high school was coach a above average high school girls team in class D. Congrats im sure every person in this thread could do that in a heartbeat. The guy was a scumbag and ruined two programs. If people are arguing that he did any good in Fredonia think back to who he forced off the team in his first weeks as coach. Mac McMahill a SUNYAC champ and 1:53 guy, Sarah Furman who was a damn good 10k runner, and Rob Fallon who despite being a shithead was a pretty damn talented runner (15:45 freshman). Not only did he do this but he ruined Fredonias recruiting classes two years in a row. Relegating Fredonia to the back of the SUNYAC for years to come.
In other news:
Lee Berube=Still better than everyone else in the SUNYAC
Cortland= Running well but slightly dissapointed with how they are running after the amazing cross season they are had
Oneonta= Everywhere on the leaderboard, nice job to their coaches.
Alex Ngabo= Runs for Buff State now, Dark horse for everything at SUNYACS. The kid has no idea what he is doing but is STUPID talented.
The real question is when will the SUNYAC meet move to OCC rather than being at that shit hole HOBART. Seriously I've heard its extremely expensive and it might be the worst facility period. Like the worst track facility still in existence. I know Woodsy would freak out if SUNY G had to go more than an hour to get to SUNYACs but come on. Go to OCC or St. Lawrence even Colgate, all are far superior facilities and most are more centrally located in the state. Until then everyone will be embarrassed to post videos from the SUNYAC champs even if someone goes sub 4. HOBART IS A JOKE!

in my understanding SUNYACS will be held at Brockport state after they finish their new indoor facility this summer and from there on out.
