Anyone ever had a "Sports Hernia" aka: "Sportsman's hernia", "Gilmore's groin", or &quot

I am 8 weeks out of surgery with Dr. Meyers in Philadelphia. Everything feels great except for my upper abdomen. My groin feels fine and there is a lot of scar tissue and bumpiness at the incision site. By my belly button there is pain whenever I exercise and I think it could be a strain. Has anyone had pain like this after the surgery?

Also, I do not know when I am ready to start running. How will I know when I am ready?

I had surgery with Meyers, April 07. At 6 weeks I sought neural therapy to help control pain, as I too felt no relief from the pain experienced pre-surgery. I was just thinking about this the other day, so I'm glad you asked. Neural therapy improved healing, for sure. Not only was my pain better, but the incision site also healed much quicker. My naturopath told me it's like cosmetic surgery for scars.

That said, I was still in pain for a while longer and even to this day, over a year later, I'm not 100% pain free. More like 85-90%. Neural therapy helped, though, and I would give it a try if I were you.

Now, I've also had platelet injections for a different issue (I think that's what you meant - they take blood, spin it in a centerfuge and take the platelets that were separated and inject them into the wound site). I am not sure how long you should wait before you consider this approach, though. For my knee, it helped, no doubt. I'm definitely an advocate.

10 weeks out, to me, is the crawling stage, using a baby analogy. This is not a lot of time to heal and the process could take months. Are you working out? Have you tried to "grit through it" like Meyers would suggest? Be patient...depending on how long you've had the injury you might be in for a long recovery period. Or, you might have some other issue (labrum tear or other tear) not addressed by Meyers.

He did find a tear and repaired it, correct?

So neural therapy involves injections also? Interesting, I've never really heard of it. Kinda reminds me of prolotherapy to some extent, although it has a more specific intention compared to just trying to cause a healing response.

I'll bring it up when I see a PT next week. My guess is they will be clueless, though, since thats usually the response I get to new ideas. At that meeting I'll also be having iontophrenisis done, which actually uses ions as well (I googled neural therapy and so now I'm trying to talk as if I know what I'm talking about).

Anway, the real question is am I really in the "crawling" stage? I know I'm relatively early but in terms of any progress, I'm either at 0% or in the negatives. I understand the "grit and bear it" ideology of Meyers, except it doesn't make sense to me because I am a sprinter and I can't really sprint. I fought my way through groin pain for three years and I ended up blowing out my left tire (groin/leg). I have a serious problem with his "grit and bear it" theory to recovery from his surgery.

Platelet injections was what I was talking about, but I had forgotten the background on how they do it. What makes you think its too early for that? I don't see myself getting it within the next month, though, as I think they will be trying other things out on me first before they take that step (like the ionto, more PT, the nitro pads, and whatever else we come up with like possiblyl the neural therapy).

The thing that bothers me is the claim that you can recover in 6-8 weeks after the Meyers surgery (though it is obvious that all results won't turn out that way) but then after surgery if you aren't feeling great 8-10 weeks out all you get is the "well its early, just deal with it". And that isn't an attack on you, thats the type of response I get from the Meyers office.

Anyway, Meyers repaired a torn adductor, as well as some torn rectus adominus muscles. I have been diagnosed with a labreal tear, but no one thinks it has anything to do with my pain, particularly because the numbed my hip joint during a MRI on my hip and it didn't take any of my pain away. At this point I know I'm in for a long recovery time, but the problem is that based on how I feel I don't see any real recovery coming from any of this and my goal was to be sprinting by September. Now I'm worrying about making it back to sprint at all next year....or ever.

What I want to find is the "magic cure", but not the kind that fixes me in a day. I just want to find the kind that lets me get progressively better (and ultimately 100%) in at least the next couple months.

Thats why I'm trying to look into these other things. Thanks for the neural therapy idea. I'll let the board know about the "nitro pads". I've still got a blog going at

with the mri, did they check you for hip fai in addition to the labral tears?

fai would most certainly keep the pain going as it would alter your fascia and keep tension in the groin muscles.

i know from expereince. waiting for the word on what to do next- fai arthroscopy or perhaps resurfacing.

2 years post op. still ahve issues but not as bad, not nearly as bad, just different.

Hi everyone, I had mesh put in for a sports hernia about 6 months ago. Everything felt much better and was conitnuing ot inmporve until about a month ago. I started ahving a great deal of pain and tightness up higher in my stomach. It is strange because it doesn't hurt if I run, or if I am standing, but it hurts a lot if i am sitting. I talked with a few docotors about it, and they both thought it sounded like a nerve entrapment from the surgery. Anyone have any insight into this problem?

A hip specialist, after looking at my mri, thought I had FAI as well as a labral tear. After further consulatation with colleagues he dismissed the FAI but still wants to perform hip arthroscopy for the tear. I am unsure on this as I'm not convinced this is the source of all my groin pain - I've already had unsuccesful mesh repair for the SH.

Anyone had hip arthroscopy for a labral tear and it's cured their SH?

I am going to seek a 2nd opinion from another hip specialist before thinking about arthroscopy.

Any other ideas?

First - I want to thank wejo for putting threads back up on "Let's Run"; you are saving lives (figuratively) here in this dialogue and it is the only like repository anywhere.

Next - Meyers surgery is *your* recovery, not his. There is a cliff there and you can go back off. His work may not come undone but whatever concomitant issue you are suffer from can collapse. Do your best to follow routine and learn rehab modalities. My case, buried in here, it took 2 + years. But now I am stronger than ever (different, tho' - thanks to requisite mental adjustments) and have learned much.

Re: AP surgery and hip surgery. William's revision is an opportunity to do the most by doing the least. Joint surgery is a *really* big deal. Pelvic floor repair (as awful as it sounds, and it is pretty awful) is not joint surgery. Once hip girdle starts coming apart all kinds of complaint can present (lower lumbar, etc.). Athletes often have labral hip tears...

Choose the invasive procedure that can do the most to reinforce the compartment by cutting the least - but differentiate between the need to spackle a wall and rebuild one; remember - once the unwinding has begun you are up a road that will probably leave you physically and mentally at a different place (or, if you don't make the requisite mental adjustment, leave you debilitated again).

I had the labral repair three months ago and I am much better in that area. Still having some problems from the hernia as I mentioned above.

I was not aware that hip problems can cause low back pain. Just curious as to how that works? Is actually pain in the low back or pain from the hip the seems like it is coming from the low back?

Update: Has bilateral surgery with adductors released with Meyers 11 weeks ago. Despite a few setbacks, I was doing quite well until 10 days ago when (with meyer's approval) I tried playing some soccer. Just some low-key over 30 league short field. No pain while playing, and just some muscle sorness afterward. Tried again the next night. Had some pain so I took it real easy. Since then, I've had pain in both adductors, one wound site, and, scariest of all, a couple inches below my navel. That's where my pain began two years ago. The feeling of abdominal weakness was gone within days of the surgery, but now its back as bad as ever. I was willing to give up soccer if I could run, work and do other stuff without too much pain, but I fell for all the stuff about pushing through the pain and the more active you are the better the final result. Now I feel pretty stupid. It feels like I'm back where I started. Guess I'll call Meyers tomorrow, as today was worse than yesterday.

Hi everyone. I have read every page up to page 55 and I thought I would post. First off, great info here!

My groin pains all started about 2 months ago. I play basketball about 2-4 times a week. I am 33 years old and I am pretty fast for my age. My groin pains just mysteriously appeared after a game of basketball. Now that I think back, I actually did roman chair sit-ups the night before and I haven't done those in a long time. I tried to rest it for a week and I thought I was fine because the pain wasn't there anymore. Sure enough it came right back after a long game of Basketball. Did this for about 2 weeks. I went to see my family doctor and she did the whole cough and touched my nuts, but ruled out a hernia.

I mainly feel pain in my right groin area, deep in the crevice and a slight pain in my right lower abdomen. 2 weeks ago, I decided to fully rest it and not do any activities. Then a couple of days ago I tried a stationary bike and then jogged a bit. I felt awesome. Then yesterday, I tried a full court of bball....but after about 45 mins, the sharp groin pain came back and I couldn't sprint anymore.

I went home, iced it, heated it, iced it, heated it and all is well again. The pain is very very very dull. And almost gone, but worried that it will come back again if I play.

I can touch my toes, I have full range of motion with no pain, I can get up with no pain from sitting, coughing or sneezing doesnt hurt, i just dont know if it is different than the AP or Sports Hernia in this thread.

Has anyone have the same symptoms as I do? Meaning NO PAIN AT ALL until sprinting or cutting? I have an appointment with a local sports med doctor that deal with a lot of the Charger Football team on Friday (tomorrow) and hopefully he can tell me what I have.

Hi all. I'm (still) trying to determine if I have a sports hernia. I posted back on page 72 (under "wondering if I have this issue"). Since then, I've seen my orthopedist twice, done four weeks of PT, focusing on my hip adductor. Pain is mostly in the hip adductor, and in my hip flexor, lower left abs when sneezing. I've run only about 40 miles in the last month, and haven't run in 2-1/2 weeks.

After my PT, I went back to my orthopedist to do some tests. Bone scan was negative, test for a regular hernia was negative, but an MRI showed a minor stress fracture in my pubic ramis. The orthopedist, however, is skeptical that the stress fracture, if it is a stress fracture, is what is causing my pain. He told me to take four weeks off and then try returning to running. If the pain is still there, he suggested I contact Dr. Meyers.

Many people hear have posted about their groin pain. My pain is more in my left adductor, all along the inner thight, but there is pain in my left hip flexor as well, and even on the bone that you sit on (left side). I feel okay during a run, but feel very stiff. But if I push the run a bit, the pain appears later in the day and the next morning. Sneezing also hurts, especially the following morning. Moving around in bed is difficult when lifting my left leg. For those of you who have had surgery, were your symptoms similar to mine?

I'm still reading through all 77 pages and am up to page 30.

Wondering if someone here who has had SH surgery can tell me if they had symptoms like mine. (note that I posted on page 72 as "wondering if I have this issue") My symptoms are, in order of pain level:

1) pain in left hip adductor, all along the inner thigh but worst near the groin

2) pain in the left hip flexor and just above it

3) pain when I sneeze on the left side along the crease of the groin

4) pain in my hip adductor very near the hips when standing on my left leg (e.g., when putting underwear on)

5) no real pain in the testicles or in the middle of my body -- it's all to the left side.

Taking days off helps with all of the above, and running actually makes it feel better -- until I stop. Later in the day the pain comes back, and if I push the run a bit, it's pretty bad in the morning.

I had tests that showed no regular hernia, bone scan was negative, but an MRI of the pelvis showed a minor stress fracture in the pubic ramis. However, my orthopedist is skeptical that the stress fracture is what's causing my pain.

I'm currently in week 3 of four weeks off of running, and I will start again after four weeks to see if the pain is still there. If it is, my orthopedist advised me to call Dr. Meyers.

After reading a whole lot of these posts I am reporting that I will be going to see a surgeon tomorrow (Monday), Dr. David Park who is one of many surgeons in a group, North Atlanta Surgical Associates. I, like many of you have been experiencing pain in my groin area when running. I am an avid runner who has completed 14 marathons to date and planning to run my 15th in November (NYC Marathon).

My local internist checked me out and noticed a tear in my inguinal canal and has told me that I have the sportsman hernia. Just curious, am I being realistic by still planning to run the NYC Marathon in November after this surgery which I am hoping to take place this week or next week?

Any help is greatly appreciated. I have been running with this "groin" pain for the past month or so and now it has become unbearable to run with it.

Ive been having pain about 2 months now. Its a tiny bit above where the V on the abs are. Like: \ pubic /... The / \ represent the V cut.

My doctor believes it was a tear in my fascia, and not a hernia, although I just discovered through this website that might be it. The pain is in that area, some days better than others, but never bad enough it puts me out. I havent worked out in a while because I thought rest would heal, but its not.

My testicals have been hurting during this also. But only on and off.
