It's the same surgery forward Kris Draper had last summer.

Hello everyone,

I had sports hernia surgery in November 2007 and was back playing soccer in Feb 2008 with no pain or discomfort. In the last week the pain in my abdomen has returned. Does anyone have any experience of this or could point me in the right direction. I am worried the injury has come back but not sure if this may be a common occurence. Thanks

Sorry about my language. I am having surgery with Dr Meyers wednesday. I also have Aetna has a provider as well. I am about to do my second appeal with them. Have you gotten any luck with them so far? I am paying this out of pocket. $#%^&**^%^$^&*(

PLease let me know who it is working for you.

Also MArkR relapse after surgery is getting me paranoid. I hope to only do this surgery once!!

Hi Marc,

I had my surgery less than 3 weeks ago, and got my "explanation of benefits" on Friday for a few things. I'm still a little uncertain even what it means. The EoB has two things from my MRI, and one from the anesthesiologist. Everything is under the column "not payable by plan."

One of the MRI things and the anesthesia had these two codes on it:

1 - Your plan does not provide coverage for charges that you are not legally responsible to pay.

2 - THESE PROFESSIONAL CHARGES ARE INCLUDED IN THE NEGOTIATED RATE FOR THE RELATED HOSPITAL CONFINEMENT

And the other MRI thing had this code:

3 - This service was not precertified and the provider may not bill you for this service. The provider may bill you if agreed upon prior to the performance of the service.

I recieved a bill for $431 for one of the MRI charges (the one with codes 1 and 2) a couple weeks ago. I payed it with my credit card, but when I got my credit card statement, it was credited back.

So, I really don't know what's going on.

By the way, do you have HMO or PPO?

I have PPO. Working on my second appeal with them idiots. I am trying to move the surgery from the experimental bucket to the non experimental bucket so to speak. I hope to be successfull. We'll see. Did you start/do any appeal yet?

Who did your surgery? Did you feel any injury when pain started again? Any other details would be useful. I'm 6 1/2 weeks out and trying to decide if I should play soccer again, or just be happy now that I can run and do other recreational activities. I just emailed Meyers today asking what he thinks.

Hi guys!

As I have written before I have had my groinproblems for a long time. A big problem for me now is how to sleep! I have always slept on my stomach but now that hurts so I try to sleep on my back but that is almost impossible because I am really not used to it and my hip hurts from that. Sleeping on the side is no option since it hurts the most!

I reallyneed my sleep and I am not going to have surgery before October so I would appreciate some advice or tips. Has any one else had this problems?

How has your recovery been going, jeff 55? As far as the adductors themselves, how do they feel?

I'm around the same post op time as you, but my groin feels terrible and I've dropped running in an effort to let things settle down.

The status of my big charge ($28k+) just showed up on the website and is listed as "in progress." If it gets rejected, I will appeal.

How are you going about your appeal? If you do not succeed, do you know how much you're going to be on the hook for?

To similar situation,

I'm actually recovering pretty well. I had bilateral surgery with both adductors released. They said I was torn up more than most. But, I'm up to 4 miles on my runs, and actually could go further if all my other muscles didn't ache so much. I have some adductor pain, but not so much when I run. I notice it more if I get up from kneeling, or sometimes when I strain to get a shoe on, mostly on the one side that I had an "incident" with at day 17. (A sprinkler came on unexpectedly and I instinctively tried to outrun it. I had a distinct tearing sensation in the adductor area on one side.) I have just started to target the adductors with some strenghtening using a theraband. We'll see how that goes-so far it seems to make it worse in the short term.

I still feel discomfort at the wound sites, but not really pain. The only other real pain I experience is straight up from the bone at the very bottom of my groin. I notice it most when turning backwards and forwards while running.

Overall, though, I am right now already better than I was before surgery. I can run, do some crunches,and generally feel stronger than I have in two years.

We are not doing to well with the appeal. they denied my first appeal. I will work on my second appeal when I am done with the surgery. I have to check in at 9:45am this morning and going under the knife at around noon here in Philly.

They (Aetna) are now saying it is pre-existing condition. #$%$^&*^%$#%^&*(&^%$^& I may get a lawyer involved, not sure yet. But for now I am paying out of pocket. $4000 for the surgery (both side) to Meyers and $9000 for Hospital cost. Not good.

However, I am not going to give up easy on fighting Aetna.

Good luck with the surgery, I didn't realize you hadn't gone under yet. I'm 18 days out now and about to begin my rehab, and probably the appeals process on my claim. Marcia had said it would be about $14k if it got rejected, I just wanted to see what your experience was.

On fighting the claim, the two reasons they gave for rejecting it were that the treatment was experimental and the condition preexisting, correct? Did they give any other reason than what they had in the policy bulliten? I'm trying to think about how to fight the experimental part, and I'll let you know if I have any ideas. Hopefully they don't somehow claim my condition is preexisting as well. Blech.

I suffered with groin pain for 3 years before having surgery last week.The Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine publishes original research related to sports medicine. Hello Janet;I was wondering about the hip problem, I also think I have the hip problem (the labral tear im assuming) as well as the sh . I think I have the hip problem because my hip clicks and it hurts , I had two questions:1- how does Meyer fix the hip problem? and what happens if you only do the sh and not do the hip surgery?2- what about Muschawek? I never heard about her procedures adddressing the possible hip problems associated with the sh?3- Where do you get your data regarding the 37% people with hip problems?thank you so much for your time;John

I am doing most of my rehab in the water still as I am one of the 37% who have the hip problem too and will be having surgery for that later on in the year. On land I am doing the basic core exercises and the light upper body weights.

No running or cycling for me until I get the hip fixed.

Still weighing a trip to Germany (I've been diagnosed w/ bilateral sh by Muschaweck herself)...

I've been dealing w/ this for three years. But what I have I wouldn't call "pain". I'd call it chronic soreness/discomfort. I'd call it severely limiting (eg I can ride my bike, swim but can't really run with any effectiveness)...

I've seen so many on this board cite "pain". Are any of you dealing with what I've described (vs. pain)?

The same thing with me. Its not a pain for me, just a discomfort in my scrotum, thigh, perineum. Though it doesnt hurt that much it limits my activities. I have stopped brisk activities for months. I am having this problem for last 4 months.

You dint have any improvements in the last 3 years at all? Are you involved in any sports? What treatments did you take during these years? Were you involved in any sports through out this period? I wasnt involved in any sports for the last 7 to 8 months and I am having this problem.

It's waxed and waned over the past three years. Sometimes completely limiting, sometimes not. I'm pretty active, doing something just about every day (basketball, running, cycling, swimming, lifting) and I can continue to do most (not all) activities. I'm just limited.

Taking prescription anti-inflammatories actually works really well, but that's not obviously a long-term solution.

It's just always there.

I was misdiagnosed with Osteitis Pubis. I went through Physical Therapy a few times, which helped with the symptoms stemming from the sh, but not the root cause.

Really glad to have gotten a diagnosis of sh, but now trying to weed through the facts (mostly from this great thread) to decide about what to do next (whose procedure, where, etc).

I would also describe most of my symptoms over the 20 months before surgery as discomfort. If I sufficiently limited my activities-no pain at all. I could usually bike without any problem unless I really pounded the hills. But running, kayaking, even walking several miles a few days in a row would imflame things, and I'd get pain for about 4-5 days. For me the issue was only partly the pain, but also the uncertainty every time I did something, wondering if I was "fraying" that weakened connection even more. There was definitely a weakness in my lower abdomen that I could feel whenever I lifted something, raked leaves, or shoveled snow.

But-amazingly, after surgery, long before the pain was gone, the weakness had left. I also was able to squeeze my knees together within a few days of the surgery without the usual discomfort. Bottom line-my life is better.
