Anyone ever had a "Sports Hernia" aka: "Sportsman's hernia", "Gilmore's groin", or &quot

Thanks Joe... I had my chiropractor look at my X-ray in addition to my orthopedist. He doesn't see any major problem structurally. I'm going to see a local specialist for the hip problem next. But I contacted Marcia via e-mail to see if I can at least get a visit with Meyers.

I'm pretty convinced that I have a sports hernia because all of my symptoms from day one are pretty consistent with what I've read here and other sites. My thinking is that the hip issue -if it in fact does exist- is adding to the inguinal/groin pain and abdominal pain or vice versa. My orthopedist did some range of motion exercises today that did promote some discomfort in my hip. And I have noticed it more recently during some stretching.

I was just wondering because I've read some articles about some pro players who developed labral tears in conjunction with the sports hernias. The articles seemed to indicate the labral tears developed out of imbalance due to the sports hernia... just wondering...

i was told i have a posterior labral tear on the worse side..but many docs incl hip specialist aat hss in nyc said to leave it alone. if it is bad enough to warrant surgery, you might as well get a full on resurfacing- quicker recovery.

meyers does link sh with labral tears, but that theory is also probably leading to more sugeries to complete the study (?).

mike l used to post here and last we heard went for labral tear surgery. havent heard from him since.

some people had the labral done first, then sports hernia; and with some of them the labral surgery did nothing to fix their pains.

one of my mris said yes to labral tear and another said no.

i would say, but im no doc, that sports hernias are all based on muscle imbalances and overuse.

hip fai can apparently also come about from overuse.

If you have someone driving you'll be fine. Its comfortable to sit in a car, and you'll be on some drugs. They make you sleepy, so steal a pillow from the hotel.

I had a sports hernia fixed 4 months ago, and had hip impingment/labral tear repair done two weeks ago. The sports hernia was mostly better but I was still hurting a lot in my adductors/groin/hip, hence the surgery. My doctor, who is one of the best hips docs around, said sports hernias are often a bi-product of a hip impingement. I am happy to report that two weeks out and my I feel 90% better. I still have some residual pain in my hip which is to be expected this soon after surgery, but I have no doubts about making a full recovery. I highly suggest those of you with lingering problems look into this. And if you live near St. Louis I can give you info on my doctor.

Well I'm in Germany, laying in the clinical guest house after surgery number1. The right side is to be done tomorrow. I will deft post again when I get back home. And about the hip problems, are the pains symptoms like a SH do they come and go? And were exactly are they felt. I developed a pain under my right erector muscle(under the lower left back) and pain that comes and goes on the outside of both legs, I would say at the beltline? Any thougts?

So far so good here, everyone is very nice. Prognosis on the left so far was a damaged nerve from mesh that was placed in on dec 2007. She cut the nerve and moved the mesh.

When I had surgery last Feb there was another guy I shared a room with who left at about 9 p.m. Friday night (the night of the surgery). I'm pretty sure he had the Pelvic Floor Repair as well. He may have been a special case. One of the Interns did come by to check on me Saturday morning before I left. I don't know why you couldn't sleep in a hotel and come back to Dr Meyers office the next morning if they want to check on you.

I've frequented this post for a couple years, and after 2.5 years had bilateral sports hernia surgery 9 weeks ago.

All this talk about labral tears has me thinking about my own condition. I've had bilateral hip pain for about a year. The pain occurs mostly with walking and running and is located posterior to my hip socket and around the piriformis and gluteus minimus. I also have mild si joint dysfunction secondary to the sports hernia. This all could just be trigger points due to misaligned posture, compensatory patterns, or referred si joint pain.

Are there standard labral tear symptoms? Do my symptoms sound like that?

Sounds similar to my pain with the labral tear. It would be worth getting checked out.

The answer to that's a bit cloudy. The total bill for the surgery, anethsesiologist and overnight hospital stay was about $30k, however I was told that if insurance ultimately rejected it I would have to pay less personally (a lot less, like $10k) and I was also told that the insurance company never pays that amount either. Dr. Meyers fee was about $3k, the rest was in the ancillary services and the fluff that undoubtedly comes with the whole insurance vs provider battle.

I could handle a $3,000 bill, but $30,000 would be a problem.

I have an appointment to see a surgeon tomorrow. I may have

a run of the mill inguinal hernia, but a lot of the descriptions I've read about Gilmore's Groin and even the labral tear sound eerily familiar.

Whatever it is it is caused me to go from 100 miles a week of running to zero real fast. Two hour walks are about it and a couple of hours later my right inguinal area becomes noticeably sorer.

Strictly speaking for myself, in hindsight I would not have spent the evening in a hotel. I think the pain of getting myself there (even with assistance) would have been tougher than sleeping there with self administered Percoset.

I'm starting to have those symptoms also... I'm going to see a hip specialist soon. My MRI indicates a problem on my left side where I have experienced the groin pain/sports hernia. I think because I have been limping when it was at its worst, my hips are starting to get irritated.

My only rationalization for it not being a torn labrum is that since I've had the SH for so long, I haven't ran in over two years. And pretty much haven't done any land cardio outside of the elliptical. I only started having the sxs after 2 years with a SH (6 mos ago).

After just having SH surgery, I guess you can empathize with the frustration of requiring another surgery for yet another poorly diagnosed injury.

Did you have hip clicking and/or limited ROM?

Were you an active runner prior to the SH?

What kind of SH surgery did you have (mesh, floor repair, etc)?

When did your SH sxs begin to improve? I'm 9 weeks out and still getting pain after a full work day of being on my feet (work at a university and walk alot). Can't run.

What was your activity level after the SH surgery but before the hip surgery?

Did you do PT?

Did your hip pain ever abate during the day (sitting, after stretching, etc.)?

Thanks for the answers. The only reason I even considered leaving the night of the surgery was that , by coincidence, the agreement between the hospital (Hahnemann) and my insurer, Blue Cross, runs out the day of my surgery so I'm having trouble finding out what it will actually cost. Marcia (and Meyers) seem to be a lot busier than they were a year ago when I first went there. Guess I'll just spend the night and pay what I have to.

Two bike rides last weekend and Monday reaching over my head to drive in some screws at work have put me back in pain-which is great. Gives me the reminder that I really have no other option if I want to live a full life. I'll let you all know how I make out, since I'm about the oldest here (although Meyers told me he fixed a professional bowler who was about 66)

What type of MRI did you have? MRI arthography?

I think this was covered a few posts back, but does anyone know if a pelvis MRI can show a hip pathology?

I've had four of them, all of which were negative for everything-however, my SH surgeon reanalyzed my most recent and observed a higher signal in my groin which is indicative of a SH. So, who knows, with a trained eye maybe a labral tear can be found.....

I honestly don't know what type of MRI I had. It didn't show any abnormalities in my groin, but here's what it said about my hip...

Areas of signal alteration as the femoral heads blend into the necks anteriorly and laterally. This is greater on the left side (side of groin pain) than the right. The pattern of signal alterations area are a little bit unusual and this raises the issue of an element of femoracetabular impingement but clinical correlation is needed.

My orthopedist did some range of motion stretches and it did prove to be uncomfortable in my hip. More recently, I heard a popping noise when I did a stretch at home. Ever since, I have been having pain in my left hip.

The rest of my MRI showed nothing...

Symphysis is patent SI joints patent and symmetric. There is no inguinal adenopathy on either side. There no free fluid in the pelvis.

I had my sports hernia for about a year and a half before the hip problems started with me as well, and I hadn't been running for quite a while when they started. This surgery has not been even half as bad as the sh surgery. I started PT the day after surgery and they even put me on the stationary bike a couple of minutes. My only regret is that I didn't have this done much sooner. To answer your other questions:

Did you have hip clicking and/or limited ROM? Yes

Were you an active runner prior to the SH? Yes, collegiate All-American, ran with the sh two years before surgery.

What kind of SH surgery did you have (mesh, floor repair, etc)? I had a mesh pelvic floor repair, done by Dr. Brunt in St. Louis.

When did your SH sxs begin to improve? I'm 9 weeks out and still getting pain after a full work day of being on my feet (work at a university and walk alot). Can't run.

I am about 4 months out, still have some dull aches but I did try running for a few weeks before I was diagnosed with the hip problem, and the pain from the sports hernia was better. At nine weeks you should be feeling improved but it is normal for you to still have pain after being on your feet a lot. But there should be some noticeable improvement. Be patient, this injury takes time.

What was your activity level after the SH surgery but before the hip surgery? I was doing some limited jogging, which felt fine with the sports hernia, it just hurt the hip. I was biking and lifting weights every other day. The biking did hurt my hip but not nearly as much as running.

Did you do PT? Yes, after the sh, and I'm doing it again now. It is a must if you want either of these injuries to improve after surgery.

Did your hip pain ever abate during the day (sitting, after stretching, etc.)?

If I would lay down for a long time it would sometimes feel better, but walking, and even sitting seemed to make it hurt.

Don't hesitate to ask any more questions, I'm glad to help if I can. I think a lot of the people on here who get the sh surgery and the pain never goes away or comes back may very well have an underlying issue like the hip impingement that I had, and until it gets fixed the sports hernia won't get better. Just my theory.

I was referred to a Dr. Larry Stevens in Indianapolis, IN (actually Carmel, IN) I live fairly close by...closer than Philadelphia and Dr. Myers at least.

He's from IU Med School and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with him?
