Update, please
He must have crashed. It has never been a good idea to attempt what he did.
desperate for beantown please reply to this thread
He was complaining that his shins were killing him back on page three of this thread. He's probably busy getting fitted for a cast.
Maybe he's just out there running. And running. And running...
Hello everyone! I'm sorry I took forever to update this thread. I'm still healthy. I've toned it down the last month to make sure I was healthy. probably averaged 80-90 the last three weeks. I'm taking it very easy starting this week and we will see how it goes. I don't think I'm in shape for a sub 2:40, but I believe I'm capable of anywhere from 2:40-3:00. I haven't raced because I haven't felt fresh enough to risk it. I did run one 10k where I was led the wrong way. I ran like 39:00 but probably went 3 minutes out of my way. I ran the last three controlled because I was so far out of first I didn't care anymore.
Anyway, I'm happy to say that I made it. I am going for a 22 miles today as my second to last long run. Hope everyone is doing well.
I also want to add that I've grown a sweet beard and mustache. I started growing it for every week I did over 100, but decided to keep it through my taper.
just a note of encouragement - I upped my mileage this winter and it is really showing benefits - I did a 10 mile race last week and at mile 8 I felt great rather than sagging - I dropped my race pace 10 seconds a mile and was pleasantly surprised.
I figure if a college guy can knock out 100 miles in about 80 hours while drinking 100 beers, I can at least try to cram in the miles - at almost 43, I'm too old do the drinking part.
I just went from less than 25 mpw and over the winter (including last week - tons of snow on the ground still at home) to 130+ mile this week to kick start my fitness. I do ski over the winter, so I wasn't totally out of shape (though I'm over 160 lbs, my PR race weight 20 years ago was about 140 lbs, and recent race weight is about 155 lbs). I have run up to 145 mi/week 20+ years ago back in college (and 120 mpw for about 2 weeks this past fall), so I knew my body could hold up. I was able to do this in past week because I'm on vacation in CA visiting family - I won't be able keep this up at home when I get back to work on Tuesday.
In the past I've noticed that my body can adapt and get comfortable with the miles even during the course of a huge mileage increase, and this past week was no exception. I think of it as cramming in the base. I kept the pace easy didn't do any faster workouts.
My past week and how I felt each day:
Mon am: 20 miles (10:28 pace, but very hilly) Quicksilver trails. Tried to take downhills easy anticipating possible quad soreness later. Stopped at a drinking fountain 2 hrs in because it was kind of warm - otherwise, with the temps in the 60s, I didn't have to drink or eat anything during my runs all week.
Mon pm: 9 miles (9:14 pace, hilly) Quicksilver trails - Still felt good, so I decided to do a second run. I could feel my quads on the downhills.
Tues: 15.4 miles (11:00 pace, very hilly) Quicksilver trails. Quads were still on the downhills
Wed: 15.3 miles (11:11 pace, very hilly) Quicksilver trails. Quads sore.
Thurs: 19.1 miles (9:38 pace, hilly) roads-Edgewood Park-road-Huddart Park/Phleger Estate loop (up to Skyline)-roads. Quads sore, but getting better. Great to be running under redwoods! Miss that a lot where I live now in AK.
Fri am: 11.5 miles (11:18 pace, hilly) Edgewood Park loops. Not very motived to keep a steady pace while doing little loops, ended up reading interpretive signs, etc.
Fri pm: (23 miles hilly road bike ride up to Skyline Blvd.) First road bike ride in years. Got dropped like a rock on the downhill by my brother.
Sat: 20 miles (9:54 pace, very hilly) roads-Huddart Park/Phleger Estate loop-roads. Started out really slowly and, like many runs this week, I felt like I probably did this run on fat reserves - not a bad thing. Once warmed up, I could run a decent pace. le
Sun: 20 miles (8:51 pace, very hilly) roads-Huddart Park/Phleger Estate loop-roads. Felt great, fastest pace all week, and it just came to me - still not trying to push the pace yet. I will have to calculate elevation gain of some of these runs - might be in the 2500-3000 ft range, especially going from my brother's house on pretty big hill.
My goal this summer is to up my performance from last year in local trail races and maybe a few road races, get into about 32 min 10K shape (or better), maybe debut in the marathon in a reasonable time (though in the past, I've always bonked in races over 2 hrs).
"I run such and such high mileage" is the oldest and most stupid thing runners succumb too. So you run more mileage than
the winner, yea.

LOLOLOLROFLCOPTER
You just spent all that time and effort to try to run UNDER 3 HOURS? If you spent that amount of time learning hot to train you could get that result in half the miles!
good job, idiot! wrote:

I didn't go back and reread this thread, but I think he only topped the century mark for 2 or 3 weeks. My guess would be for the 16 weeks leading up to race day (including upcoming taper) he probably averaged 60ish so 2:40-3:00 seems reasonable.
Desperate, what is your bib number? I'll yell your letsrun handle next week when im watching in Newton.
Need pics of the beard or i'm calling shenanigans.
so are you going to run tomorrow?
So how did boston go?
The OP needs to update with results from Boston. It sucks the weather was warm and you weren't able to fully see the results of your training. But please update.
Obviously the guy crapped out because he freaked out in his training and instead of being intelligent decided to just run a ton of miles.
ultimate troll? how many people did he get in this one?
Hello everyone! I am no troll and I finished Boston. I will not give out my bib number because I don't want to reveal my identity but I can tell you my time was over 1:10 off my goal time. The heat really messed me up. I went in with the mindset that "everybody is a wuss and making a huge deal out of it all." That is a poor mindset and I should have adjusted my goal time to the weather. I finished the race with a sweet singlet farmers tan. I wore a handlebar for the entire race and ran like shit. I did not hold 100+ miles for more than 6 weeks of my training and took my last three weeks at more reasonable mileage. I thought I was in 2:35 shape the day of the race, but the marathon is a cruel and unforgiving race and I learned.my lesson. I keep forgetting to check this thread because I assume nobody in interested or believes me. Thanks for your support everyone and maybe ill jump into crash training again and update this thread. I'm sure.I'm still benefitting from that work load.
