Personally I'm satisfied that Zimmerman has been charged. My initial outrage over this case was the lack of justice. I've never insisted he was guilty or innocent (and frankly I think such insistence is stupid) but I was pissed off that the events weren't even going to be examined in a court of law. It's a disgrace that public outcry was necessary for this to happen, but now that there will be a trial there are basically three possible outcomes:
1. Zimmerman is found guilty on evidence and a murderer will spend the majority of his life in prison. Should this happen it means that justice would be done and this is an acceptable outcome given the circumstances.
2. Zimmerman is acquitted based on evidence that Martin attacked him with intent to kill. Extremely unlikely.
3. Zimmerman is acquitted based on Florida's "stand your ground" law. I personally think this is the most likely outcome. It's appalling to me that an armed person can kill an unarmed person, walk away unscathed and still claim it was "self defense". This is an outrageous law which is spreading to a number of states because of right-wing special interest groups like NRA and ALEC. If Zimmerman is acquitted, "stand your ground" will come under serious political pressure and that to me actually a preferred outcome.
