I have been running for almost 35 years. Never have run outside with headphones/earbuds. So the longest is 4 hrs. Listen while on treadmill (which is rare).
I have never run with headphones on and don't judge anyone who does, but I have a funny story...
I lived in DC for a few years after I graduated and kept running & competing in some local races, nothing major, a couple cross country races, but mostly road. After a road race another runner approached me and made some small talk about his running group and got around to asking me if I ever wanted to do a workout with them. I ended up meeting up with them for a morning run then a track workout that afternoon. The track workout was short since one of the three guys was injured and couldn't complete it, threw off the entire plan, so the rest of us decided on a run that they knew well (I didn't) that was around 9 miles. I went to my car to change out of my flats and met back up with them to start this crazy 9-miler and both of them had headphones on when I came back. I ran 9 miles with two guys who had headphones & not much of anything was said, which is how I run, by myself, anyway.
I never met up with any of them again and kept running the local races, occasionally seeing them there but never letting them know I would run with them anymore.
Where's the funny part?

That is odd, but I see that a lot... 2 more people running together and they all have iPods. I think I'd say something if that happened to me...
I never use an iPod when running long, I think it gets really annoying after like 45 minutes or so. I will occasionally use it for morning runs in the 30-45 minute range, especially if I am tired and the thought of a podcast or album gets me out of bed.
Never did this in HS or college, but now that I am old and don't care as much about being fast, this can be helpful in maintaining my fitness.

Old Timer's going to tell us how it is. What makes you think music is "noise?" I listen to music on a run because it's one of the few chances I get during the day to actually listen to music. Sometimes I'll go weeks without putting headphones in, but running combined with music is a great escape and few things compare.
For what it's worth I've gone 3.5 hours without headphones.

Actually I have done this at football and baseball games. Sometimes I like to hear the announcer and get scores from other games (pre-internet days and before they would be announced).
Of the countless thousands of miles I've run, I did not listen to headphones for a single one.
My whole running life. 100,000 miles and 45 years.
Real runners don't use headphones.

Correct. A better question would be: how long have you made it WITH using headphones? Which is about 30 min before I threw them away and picked them up on my way back outside, and ~2 hours on the treadmill.
