I am of the opinion that a Coach should be Paying the Athlete, much like in the NCAA/Professional environment of every other sport.
Think about it, NCAA coaches (and high school to some extent) recruit excellent runners to their programs as marketing tools to then recruit more and more athletes.
So, for example, a guy like Makau, Mosop, Ritzenhein, Jager, etc., should never pay a coach, the coach should be paying them because their publicity in winning races and running fast will then attract more runners and investment capital in the forms of sponsorship.
For McMillan or anyone like that to be charging sub-14:30 type guys is a complete joke. Those "authenticators" will bring in the masses via word of mouth and media in their respective markets.
DO NOT PAY A COACH IF YOU ARE COMPETITIVE IN THE REGIONAL SCENE, GUYS. Seriously, are you going to pay someone $100/mo to write a calendar filled with workouts you can pull from a book at the library?
There are great coaches out there that will not charge to coach you if you are running well and have give/take. There are too many people taking advantage of the masses, but as a semi-elite, you should not be financially depleted to improve your abilities. Coaching is about sacrifice. You think Bill Rodgers ever paid Squires? Salazar paid Dellinger? Yeah, right.
