    The original problem is essentially 48/2 times X where X=9+3.

    Or you would write it 48/2*12=288

    Put it in excel.

    This is an example of trollgebra.

    The problem "48÷2(9+3)=?" is used to illustrate the order of precedence. It is confusing, that's why it's used. The answer is 288.

    Just like your elementary school teacher told you, multiplication/division and addition/subtraction are grouped together. The acronym tells you that you do parenthesis, then exponents, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction.

    PEMDAS is not the rule, but simply a memorization technique to help remember the "precedence rule".It's a well defined, and agreed convention, that removes all ambiguity from mathematical expressions.

    Wrong, wrong, wrong, and wrong.To all those who think it's 2, you aren't familiar with the rules of mathematical precendence. That's why you are getting it wrong.288 is not a suggestion, it's the only correct answer.
