My beverage of choice would be LaPhroaig 15 (or 10, depending on the bar), neat with a splash.
Alternatively, JW has nice whiskey's as well--go with Black label on the rocks--if no Black, go Blue or Gold.
However of you have to go with Vodka, stick to Ketel; Tequila, stick with Patron; Gin, stick with Bombay--these signify hard-worker, yet entice with a hint of sophistication.
Or, if you have to go with vino, stick with classic/heavier reds: stick first with cabs, then malbecs, pinots, syrahs/petit sirahs, then merlots...etc.
I would not go with whites, unless it is a lunch meeting, or it is being appropriately paired by the waiter/head chef.
Remember: stay bold and make an impression--at least if you can't do it with your words and actions, you can do it with your drink!!!

I know this was inadvertant, but you don't mean blue label. That's top dollar, top shelf stuff. Any bar that doesn't have black label is definitely not going to have blue label.

Vodka is the light beer of spirits. A person drinking vodka announces to the world, "I want to get drunk, but I don't like the taste of liquor." Stick with gin, or better yet, some type of whiskey (Scotch, Irish, Bourbon, Rye, Japanese, etc.). Find something you like and drink it slowly. Learn to enjoy the taste of the drink first and don't get wrapped up in the need to get drunk. If you are drinking to get drunk, you probably shouldn't be drinking anyway. Beer is OK as long as it isn't light beer. Again, find what you like and enjoy it.

I don't believe it signals that one is insecure if they merely give some thought to how they fit in with their boss and co-workers.
I get the whole, "I am never going to sell out, love me as I am" thing, but if you want to get ahead in corporate america there is a lot of game playing. Wearing dark suits and ties, putting in face time, drinking gin instead of tequila shots - are all things that most people learn will help their career.
If you are serious about your career, you should probably spend some time thinking about how you present yourself. This doesn't mean sell out, and it doesn't mean pretending to be something you are not, it is taking the stuff that you don't really care about (i.e. drinking scotch instead of blue ribbon) and using it to your advantage.

Well, I understand your point of not ordering Jag Bombs and Tequila shots when out with co-workers. I like people's advice about learning what you like. I just think the idea of trying to impress the boss with your cosmopolitan drink choice is a stupid way to live life. It's better to learn what you like and order that way. Or, if you don't want to do that, stick with something simple like a gin & tonic. But don't try to be so "bold" with drink choice. There is appropriate drink choice and there is ordering to impress... the latter makes you a tool. Or, if you want to be really bold and smart, order a sparkling water. My wife rarely drinks simply because she does not like it. You would be surprised at all the conversations it has sparked. Some people get annoyed, some are impressed, some think she is trying to abstain - but all she is doing is drinking what she likes - nonalchoholic drinks. And guess what? She is successful and hangs with the big boys at her office.
