this thread reminds me of an old joke.

A guy from the army and a guy from the marines were peeing at urinals next to eachother. When they got done, the guy in the army started washing his hands as the marine began to leave without washing

As the marine was leaving the army guy says, "hey, in the army they teach us to wash our hands after we piss."

to which the marine responds, "in the marines they teach us not to piss on our hands."

I wash my hands after urinating or defecating. Not necessarily because my hands get dirty from discharging waste from my body, but because one should wash his or her hands regularly, and I use the bathroom regularly, so it's a good checkpoint.

i think that makes perfect sense.

you are already in the bathroom, your hands could get dirty with fecal matter etc and you should wash them "once in a while" anyway. that sounds like the perfect time to do it.

i cannot understand the resistance and lengths some people will go to in order to defend NOT washing their hands. the only thing i can come up with is that they are LAZY and need an excuse to justify being lazy.

In some public washrooms in Italy, including the faucet is opened with a foot-lever... non contamination there for sure...

Sometimes even after a bath you need to wash your hands.

Are you really that dense or do just enjoy arguing for the heck of it?

Please, do refute the CDC, Mayo Clinic and other health professionals. I'm sure your credentials as a letsrun poster far outweigh anything they might say regarding public health issues.

Face it folks, the majority of you arguing against this are either merely lazy, uninformed, terminally arrogant about your own body, or operating under the silly belief that washing one's hands is somehow "uncool". Then again, this is the same place where people argue about the usefulness of treadmills, the reality of evolution, and myriad other topics so I guess I'm not surprised.

Here's a hypothetical for all those who refuse to wash their hands. What if the bathroom has no doors and those sinks with sensors for automatic soap dispensers and water? Also, automatic paper towel dispensers. Like the kind at airports. Would you wash then because you didn't have to touch faucets or doors?

I'm all for washing hands. I just think the suggestion to use a paper towel to turn off the knob seems kind of silly when people are claiming that germs travel through the toilet paper while you're wiping your ass.

And I don't really care one way or the other. If people don't want to wash their hands, no big deal. I do, but probably more out of habit than anything else. It's just something that I don't think about.

The problem is, washing YOUR hands is not something you do just for YOURSELF. Rather it is for OTHER people. You touch doorknobs, you shake hands with others, you touch money, prepare food and pass it on to others.

There is a courtesy aspect of being clean that is owed to other people.

I guess it's just as well that, per other threads, these wipe-not-washers also abstain from sex.

Guys: if you find a woman who doesn't mind having your unwashed fingers all up in her business, well, good luck to the both of you, Mr. and Mrs. Disease Vector. And keep your distance from me, thanks.

I think those who are so violently opposed to washing hands in this thread fall into the same group that argues it's perfectly OK to drink and drive "because they can handle it" or those that bandit races because they feel certain rules and courtesy are options to use as they see fit and only when it benefits them..

I don't think they fall into a particular age group either, it's just that there is a segment in the population that could care less about anyone but themselves.

The only time i dont wash my hands after peeing is at a bar. Especially when they have one of those bathroom attendants.

1. My junk is cleaner than any crowded bar bathroom.

2. I don't want to tip the guy running the sinks.

If you think you're staying away from shit by washing your hands, congratulations. I'll have you know I wipe my ass on bed comforters every single time I stay in a hotel. I wipe it using the end towards the head of the bed. Since most hotels don't wash those but maybe once a week, I figure more than a few people have smelled my ass over the years.

My favorite are the f--kers hammering away on their Blackberries in the crapper while they're taking a sh-t. That's right, airborne microscopic fecal matter isn't going to get on that thing. Have fun talking into your sh-t covered phone later on in the day. While you're at it, why not just lick the freaking toilet?

As I said earlier, I'm not opposed to washing hands and I do it. But some of you are seriously OCD. You're scared of airborne fecal matter flying around in the bathroom and getting on your blackberry?

Do you eat cereal? There is actually a permissible amount of fecal matter allowed in cereal by the FDA. So, if you eat cereal, you eat pieces of sh!t for breakfast. Enjoy! I've been doing it my whole live and it's actually not that bad. Tastes pretty damn good actually.
