Are 20 somethings and younger shallow?

i agree that today's generation is not more shallow than other generations

it is really quite ridiculous... same old tired things those over 30 have been saying for 200 years

it is all the same line of crap... i'm now 30, my generation was the generation of grunge (i just missed the 80s)

if i had to pick any generation as being the absolute most shallow I would have to say the baby boomer generation

I love the idea of the hippy movement - (how can I not, my grad degree is from berkeley); i love what it was supposed to stand for BUT

the baby boomers proved their generation was the most hypocritical generation EVER

After the 60s, early 70s they went on to elect REAGAN, BUSH and BUSH again, they started the SUV driving, IKEA buying trend

THEY HAVE proved they are more shallow then any other generation before - it is just made worse by what the principles they supposedly stood for

I would agree that the baby boomers are the most ridiculously materialistic generation to ever walk the earth. They are the ones infecting the children of today with their Donald Trump worshiping ways.

My father is quite hypocritical, but I love him.

He still makes fun of me for driving 25 miles once a week to recycle. He doesn't understand spending more money on bread from the local bakery than white bunny bread on VIC special for 68 cents. He refuses to shop at local stores b/c they are more expensive.

He spends tens of thousands of dollars a year on a country club membership, and he doesn't even play golf anymore.

good points... and sounds very familiarit is what it is - they are materialisticwhat chaps my ass though is the way they started out so promising in the 60s... i guess all they really wanted was an excuse to do drugs (and hey i can't blame them)at least my generation was more up front about it and just said screw the political protesting we are just going to do what the hell we want even if that means losing a few along the way (cobain, etc.)

I am now 30 years old to answer your questionsno i actually don't own a cell phone despite making extremely good money... if i did own own i would paynever had a computer growing upi have an ipod, i bought it... same with car and insurancei had a scholarship to college and grants for graduate schoollet me ask you some questions... did your parents buy you clothes when you are a kid? did your parents buy you a toy train? did your parents own a washing machine so that you didn't have to wash clothese in the river? did you through a rant when you were drafted for the vietnam war?times change and so does technology, toys and their costsnow who is materialistic?

the more i think about it the dumber your argument gets... are you seriously implying that kids should know the difference between materialistic and not upon exiting the womb?that somehow magically they should refuse what their parents want to give them...give me a break; if kids today have materialistic things there is only 1 place to put the blame

That is very not true. In France last year 50% of new babies were born out of wedlock (saw this on French news broadcast).

Also I saw something on CNN.com showing the promiscuity rates of teens in various European countries, something like 20-38% of 15 year olds were having sex depending on the country.

anEconomist has made some good points just above. I mean, even if we are getting support from our parents, what are we supposed to do, turn it down? I'm 23 and pretty much self-sufficient though poor (grad school stipend), but if my dad offers to pay my car insurance I'm not gonna be too proud to say no.

Before the baby-boomer generation, at 18 people were pretty much expected to fend for themselves. The baby-boomers generally saw themselves supported up through their early 20's (usually college), and I think that is a healthy trend that needs to continue. It is simply an investment in intellectual capital. Having your parents pay your college tuition isn't shallow, although I don't think I'd feel comfortable asking my parents to pay 6.5 years of graduate school.

birth out of marriage doesn't mean anything really. most humans ever born were not of "married" parents, at least not in your modern sense.

what does matter is that the child is cared for, wanted and supported. in france and elsewhere in europe these children have subsidised medical and dental care, unlike in the u.s.

i've seen many unmarried couples in scandinavia who have loving, intact families.

The problem is not so much with the 20 year olds and young, it is with the 30 year olds and older that allowed their kids to grown up to be shit heads.

I wasn't trying to make any qualitative judgments, I didn't even say 15 year olds having sex is a bad thing.

I was merely bringing light to the fact that the poster just made up lies to support his argument.

First my post was directed to under 22 yr. olds, your 30 so stop trying to pretend you are a kid.

Yes parents are to blame but part of maturation is accepting responsiblity for ones own behavior. So stop putting ALL the blame on mommy and daddy.

Can say much about other kids but I do not find my children to be shallow. If anything they and their friends are much more interesting than when I was a kid their age.

I would like to thank your generation for sucking up social security and depleting the ozone layer.

The fact that many 20-somethings have their parents pay for the items you listed reveals the overly dependent nature of the 20-something, but it does not necessarily imply that the 20-something is overly materialstic.
