It was misplaced by about a minute. I mapped out the course on gmap-pedometer and the mile marker should have been around 10th ave. It was right near the west side hwy. I ran the HM at 6:48 pace. My 9th mile was 7:49, my 10th mile was 5:49. The 15k mat was also misplaced. I don't think I ran 3:39 for .7 of a mile between the 15k and the 10mile mark (which is about 5:13 pace). All my other splits were right around 6:48.
Mile 9 was probably about half an Avenue block wrong. (200 Meters?) It was placed just west of 11th Avenue and should have been somewhere between 10th and 11th.
the 8th mile was about 51st St/7th.
the 10th mile was about 26th St. on the WS Highway.
Interestingly, in the Park, miles 1 and 7 were quite far apart. I always thought the Loop road was just a hair over 6 miles per circuit. Miles 1 and 7 were easily 200 M apart.
I guess the SCPF was in evidence there, as well as measuring full curb to curb road tangents.

Let me throw this in about the course (from the helicopter shots). There were pylons in Central Park marking the inside lane. I assume the course was measured in the inside lane (as it normally is in CP; unlike normal courses where you have the whole road, CP usually requires staying in the inside lane). The leaders ran outside the pylons, following the motorcycle cops. They were not cutting the course, just staying outside the pylons, thus making the course longer for them (since the course has a net 360 degree right-hand turn per lap). Runners behind them were in the inside lane.

Your graph of 1994 supports exactly what I've said. The temperature at 7:00 am will be nowhere close to 90 degrees are 83 degrees. It's not even 70 degrees.

Originally the course was measured to allow the full width of the roadway, unlike other CP courses, due to the high volume of runners. Then at literally the 11th hour (like Saturday night) the authorities said a lane had to be kept open for emergency vehicles. So those cones were to keep runners OUTSIDE the rec line, the exact opposite of normal CP procedure. I don't know if any adjustment to the start was made (wish I'd packed my Jones counter, I could have done a midnight ride for NYRR) but it seemed like most of the pack runners were using the full road, although the leaders were following the coning restrictions.
As to certification and records. The course is probably certified (NYRR is good about that); there is a time lag of a few weeks to a month from the time the state certifier signs off on it and it gets to the course registrar to scan and upload to the USATF site. And just b/c it goes through midtown you think it couldn't be measured? I asked the guy who measures the marathon course when he rides it, expecting he'd answer 3 am or something, and he said he does it in the middle of the day. Not easy or my cup of tea, but it can be done, although it can take a lot of extra time.
As for records, the course probably does not exceed the drop limitation of 1m/km, and yesterday's results will count for records (Colleen's masters AR) since the 30% separation restriction is waived if it can be proven there was no aiding tailwind, and yesterday there was a definite head/crosswind along West Side Highway.

The course drops about 100 feet or about 30 meters; that's 1.44 meters per kilometer, above the allowable 1 m/km. That's exactly the drop of the Great North Run, but much less than Lisbon's 69 meters which is way aided.

Thanks for that info. Makes sense, since the start was near the highest point in the park. I'd imagine most of that elevation loss came between there and the course exited the park; from there on any elevation loss seemed imperceptible.

Well, the UP hill on 7th was definitely perceptible coming out of the park - my first reactiong was "where the hell did this come from?"
Now that you mention it, the downhill after that to 42nd was noticeable. But on 42nd and down WSH, I think it was pretty flat.
Downhill was also noticeable on 42nd, especially 8th to 9th by Port Authority, iirc.
