When running slower, we are not only taking more strides to cover the distance, we often have a harder foot strike. When running on roads and even sidewalks, as most city dwellers have to do. The extra and harder contact to the concrete does "hurt" you a little more. Likewise running too fast puts the extra strain on the heart. Therefore we need to find a balance between the two, which boils down to running comfortably. To some this is 6:00 to others 9:00.

In the same manner not every easy/reco day is the same pace. One day 7;15 may be comfortable, when the next day it most definately is not. The almighty clock should not be the judge of our pace, but rather our feel.

If you are a 27:00 8K guy, then 6:50-6:55 pace seems reasonable for a easy and/or long run.

A 26:00 guy may be better served to run 6:35-6:40 pace for said runs.

Recovery jogs (different animal) could easily be 7:50 and 7:35 respectfully.

What about if I was a 25 minute 8k runner? I ran low 25's freshman year and stopped afterwards mainly due to a dictadorial coach who took the joy out of running for me.

I guess I was going too slow when I ran runs at 7-8:30 pace. Too bad I actually beat all of the guys on the team who thought that running slower than 7 minute pace was worthy of being excommunicated from the team.

College Runner, within 1 minute of 8K race pace is way too fast for a morning run. I would leave UConn and transfer to another school.

You're changing your argument. You intitially stated that you couldn't understand why anyway would feel sluggish at a slower pace. I made the claim that a 14:30 guy who was used to running 6:30s would feel sluggish adjusting. That's different than Geb, who presumably has been running 7 min pace or slower for a while. My point was the initial adjustment and changing of a stride so that your legs hit the ground harder and more often could be uncomfortable to those not used to it, not that it's uncomfortable for everyone.

That being said, where did you read that Geb runs these slow miles? And I'm very interested to see where you read that "droves" of East Africans are running slow on their easy days.

One more problem, you talk about no scientific study has shown that running slow makes you sluggish or 6:30s is beneficial, but then you offer no scientific studies to back up your claims. Tell me, what scientific study shows that 100 mile weeks at 8 minute pace is worth more than 70 mile weeks at 6 minute pace? I'd love to know. My point isn't necessarily that running quality mileage is better than quantity. My point is that both ways work. In this instance the guy's coach is wrong, but that doesn't mean that every person in the world running 6:30 pace would be better off running slower (and I now realize from your last post that that's not what you meant either).

I would be wiling to bet that biomechanics play a huge part in your "feelinf bad" at this slower pace. You probably run with crap form at this slower pace. Just b/c it is uncomfortable to run at a pace does not mean you should not run at that pace. 50 second pace for a quarter is uncomfortable but at times it is best to train at that pace. At times, it could be beneficial to run 6:30's. At times it could be beneficial to run at 8:00 pace. The point is that you should do it so that it becomes more comfortable in the future if it is indeed what will facilitate the best physiological response for that training session. Got another idea?

Yes it would actually hurt and I would not feel comfortable. Isn't the idea of an easy day to have the run feel easy. If 6 min. pace felt easier to me than 7 min. pace, isn't that what training is about, doing what is best for you. Would I be in massive pain at 7 min. pace? Of course not, but it wasn't anywhere near comfortable, but 6 min. pace was and my heart rate was not that high at that pace. I had success training this way so why are you arguing with me. Each person is different. I have never said everyone should be doing that, it just depends on the person. I absolutely think the coach of the orignal poster doesn't know how to coach and they should all slow down on their easy days. By the way, I also said that the 6 min. pace worked for me when I was doing lower mileage under 70 per week, but when I went over 80 then I burned out. As you do more miles, you are naturally more tired and an easier pace may feel more comfortable.

Cgaites Im glad you understand how I feel. I have also tryed different methods. Ive tryed 90mpw MAX at 630 or faster pace and ran mid to high 14's and mid to low 25s in XC. Ive tryed mega high mileage with almost no quality (15 weeks over 100 in the summer) and ran mid to high 14s with one race at 14:10 and another 3:49 and ran low 25s in XC. This time around, I am going to blend in everything, I am building a huge base (115-125 a week) thru december with 2 harder workouts a week and strides every so often, this is just for the base phase. During track season I fully expect to do a wide range of pace work, and will see what kind of results come of it. I must say though, that 85% of my weekly mileage is above 710 pace though, as hard as that is to believe. I have no ego problems forced upon me though, I "know" I will be good, not "think."

we did that at stony brook. we raced our runs and didnt do our workouts hard enough. first off we hardly ever did workouts, maybe once a week, and when we did them like for cross for a 5-6 mile race, we only did 3 miles worth of stuff and maybe hit 4 miles worth of stuff once or twice. strange methods of training. we didnt really run that fast in races, they still dont at stony brook. stop racing the runs, and do your workouts harder and do more of them

Yes, I agree. Almost all college kids (including girls- and those especially) subscribe to the Pre frenzy of guts and glory, training your ass off, racing hard, partying hard... That's just the mentality of American kids- no pain, no gain.

It always made me laugh when I met college girls on their "easy" run huffing and puffing up the hill, grimaceing and passing me at 6:30/m pace, despite the fact that they were racing 5ks at around 6min/m and I was at 4:30/m. For them, I was just a wierdo foreigner who "jogs" (mind you, at 6:30-8min/m pace) his distance runs and "somehow magically pulls off fast racing times". I wonder who has (had- in their case 'cause I doubt any of those girls competes anymore, after so many stress factures that troubled them) better approach.

Yep exactly. We got some kid who can barely break 28:00 (if he even can now) and trys to run with a sub 26:00 guy. The shame is that the fast kid gets pushed into running close to 6:00 pace to stay with this kid, it's ridiculous. I ain't no hot shot (26:54), but I only take my runs at about 7:00 pace, then when race time comes I destroy this kid. It's wonderful. It sucks cuz this guys my teammate you know, but whatever.

As for your nonsense about sub-15:00, 15:00 for 5K is a great time It's not elite, but it is 4:50 per mile for the distance.

It's more than obvious that YOU are the one who has been transplanted from Dyestat. I would be shocked if you've reached the voting age..

I'd have to echo the masses here; stop running for your college! Period! You will be able to run what you feel like you should run and enjoy doing it! Transfer to another college if that is a feasible thing. If not run unattached and travel to meets yourself. I had to do the same thing my senior year in college; best decision I ever made. I actually enjoyed running and raced better than I did with the team. The revenge factor was that I was killing the college athletes at the track meets in which they were participating in; yet the coach didn't take much notice, but was fired after that semester.
