Webb runs 7:48

Well, we disagree. I do believe he has XC talent as was displayed multiple times last year. I also think that running XC made an impact in his running well last summer. Ultimately, what the US really needs is for people like you and me to get off our asses and drop our cushy life styles and throw it on the line to add more athletes to the talent pool instead of depending on others to do the job.

My concern here is not that he didn't run fast enough, but that he's going TOO fast for this time of the season....again. Remember last season that we went to Europe for "race experience," and ended up tearing it up, beating Lagat, having the fastest time in the world at one point, BUT....by the time of the Olympics he seemed, at least in my opinion, past his peak.

Given that background, if you were Razcko, I think you'd prefer a lower key race against Carroll to one against Bekele this early. But by Purdy Points, 7:48 equates to 3:36 and 13:31, so I can't help thinking, "There he goes again." I can't believe he's in THAT much better shape, given that he ran 3:32 and 3:50 last year. It will be interesting to see what Lagat does.

In hindsight, maybe Ritz and Hudson made the wisest choice, to pass on the whole thing.

C'mon, even Webb bashers know he got screwed over in the Olympics. That sucked. He was running fast all the way up to the Olympics.

hey man, I plan on doing just that. It's just that I am busting my ass in college right now; studying, working in the summer and when i have free time, taking summer courses and trying to run (and unlike Webb I paln on staying in).

aren't guys allowed to open up in a low key meet to remove the rust to start the season? how many guys do you know open up their season in a huge race? the guy lined up for the first time this year and set a pr. i think thats a great season opener. how many athletes open up their season like that? no good coach will throw his/her athlete to the lions in their first race of the season.call me crazy but 3:32/ 3:50/ and 7:47i looks like a pretty good bio stat line to me!

Good stuff, remember that Kipchoge won an easy 4km xc race in Kenya a week before Edinburgh xc to start his season. Bekele won an easier xc race in December to start his season. Many people do it

i doubt that 7:47=peaking, definietly the potential for 7:40.

Seems to me that if, as you say, Webb "needs the experience to know a guy like Carrol (sic) will eat him up if he makes these mistakes" it was productive for him to have run this race. Now he has some of the experience you indicate he was lacking. Now Webb knows Carroll is stronger, he knows that the surges were't enough, etc.

Why are you bashing Webb, when he produced outstanding results almost all of last year and, but for one really poor race (Olympics, of course) he was a real shot in the arm for U.S. miling? If you want to bash U.S. runners there are better targets, but what's the point in any case? Webb wasn't hiding from anyone last year and he's going to be in some big races this year, but right now there's no point.

And you on the one hand say Webb shouldn't be running against the clock, but isn't that what's going to happen in tonight's race? So why should he have run there? It's only January and last night was exactly what Webb needed. He now knows he's in decent form and yet has a ways to go. Carroll is an old pro and this was no disgrace.

Bad career decisions? Are you talking about giving up NCAA eligability for millions of dollars? That was certainly smarter than anything I'd ever done.

The most important thing about 7:48 is that it is about 10 seconds ahead of where he was this time last year, and last year he'd already run a couple of races before his 3,000. Bodes well for this summer considering he ran 3:32 last year.

That Webb in a race like this would get to run not one but two races this weekend, that looks like good training and solid efforts.

So, if he was a College Senior and this was his FIRST race, what would folks be saying?

They would be saying, wow, in Webb's first race he ran the 5th fastest time at 3K in Collegiate history, losing to a 7:30 guy.

And rather than getting bashed folks would be predicting how he would run 7:40 in late Feb.

Put this in perspective , and Salsa? , get a clue

how many miles does webb do durin the fall? i've been led to believe he runs like 50-60 a week, but a 7:47??? how in the hell do you run that off 50-60 a week?
