You're right. Manti will now need to build comraderie and trust with NFL players who know that he is most likely a lying opportunist, less likely a naive rube who was the "boyfriend" of an online persona whom he never met.

I don't find it that far-fetched that Te'o might have been duped. After all, how smart is a kid who joins both his team and school in believing that "Touchdown Jesus" has any impact on the success of Notre Dame football.

The more embarrassment the Domers suffer, the better.

I think he was 100% in on this, but it got too big, so he enlisted the help of friends and family to help cover it up. They decided to "kill off" this fictional character and hope it would all just blow over. Instead it blew up.

New flash: those weren't fake tears. The AD was pressured into that statement and was seeing his job go out the window as he, ultimately, will be one of the sacrificial lambs when the truth finally emerges. Or whatever we're encouraged to believe is the truth. I'm sure we're several cycles away from it yet.
