Salazar is formally coaching Mary Cain

just to put this another way - why would you NOT have your child coached by the guy who just had his guys go 1-2 in the Olympic Games? That is a one in a million opportunity.

I think Salazar has proven that he is one of the good guys - if I had an extraordinary child like MC I would be crazy to turn down his offer to help her along.

A very good strong case could be made that Jim Mitchell is as good a coach as Alberto considering the fact that this is a local 16 year old girl, who doesn't need to be training today for races she will be running 6-10 years from now. Papa Cain has gotten himself involved with a sport he probably knows absolutely nothing about -- so he's calling in the experts. He already has one that's located a short walk away. Jim Mitchell. His Bronxville program is exactly what Mary needs to get to the next level -- which is Div One NCAA, not the European Circuit or the next Olympics. Someday in the not too distant future yes; but not today.

Agreed. Pissing all over her current coach who got her this far. This historically hasn't worked out too well.

Any update on Cain. Is she running any post season races??

I beleive that she is scheduled to run NXN in a coule weeks and get 2nd behind Sarah Baxter.

Cain ran in a NYRR XC race at Van cortlandt yesterday - I don't know her time yet. Al Sal was there to watch.

So Cain rain 17:26 at VCP yesterday, first woman and 6th overall among some medium fast guys.

So the question is how that compares to a good HS or even collegiate runner.

Footlocker regionals were at VCP last year and the winner was 18:05. So Cain was 40 seconds ahead of her. Not much competition in the area.

Against collegians, she is up near the front already.

17:26 would have placed her 4th at HEPS the last time it ran at VCP, in 2010.

So Cain really doesn't any competition in the Northeast - maybe one or two girls nationwide can run with her.

And she is starting to leapfrog collegians too -maybe she won't run in college either?

(of course the course at VCP has been changing each year yer because of construction on the flats - maybe someone knows a good college invite that was run in 2012 and can compare Cain to them?)

Or we just wait a couple months for her to run indoors.

But she seem head and shoulders ahead of HS competition, so I can understand why she would not run a HS season.

heck actually foot locker was not at VCP last year, so the hs comparison is not valid.

One or two girls nationwide?? In 5k XC there are probably more than a dozen girls nationwide who could beat her. She only had the fastest time at the Manhattan HS Invite by 14 seconds...

Mary Cain is off the charts on her 1500M times, but her 5K's are not. Sarah Baxter would have run around a 16:56 based on her Mt. Sac's time. I don't think she would win either FL or NXN...I think Mary is built for speed not for distance.

Well it's a heck of a lot faster than girls like Nicole Blood, Aislinn Ryan, and Neely Spence ran at VCP at Footlocker Regionals.

Hopefully Cain can drop a big time at Bowdoin this weekend at NXN Regionals.

fair point - that sounds like a lot of racing...unless this was a 90% effort just to get ready for serious racing

VCP is not on grass for any extended stretch. It is good old dirt. Is Bowdoin grass or dirt?

The 90% theory still doesn't make sense because that's something you would do in the week of the 3rd or 10th. Not the Sunday before a hard qualifier and two weekends before nats. This last-second race at VCP sounds like a parent's idea, not a coach's...
