Look into SMU and visit the university.
SMU is a fine school if you plan to live the rest or your life in Dallas. It doesn't mean so much otherwise.
Texas A&M and UT are equal in
Academics
Funding
Equipment, trainer quality, nutrition resources, etc
Academic support
The only differences are in city size (College Station seems a little country, and Austin like a little too much of a party city.
Texas A&M has a bit more when it comes to the quality of coaching. UT austin is a bit more popular in the overall college scene.
If we were talking about Sprints, i would say A&M has the better quality coaches hands down, but for distance, i might actually think differently. Texas has some solid distance coaches. I think UT has been able to do more with some lesser names.
I think Dan Waters didn't pan out for A&M but brought in some heck of recruits. I definitely credit McRaven for making Natosha Rogers a star, but Natosha is Water's recruit and she improved every year under Waters too. Waters should get some credit.
Coaches get fired every day. Do not count on having the same coach all 4-5 years. You better be intelligent enough to know what training you need without someone holding your hand through every workout. Red flags are already going up, since a parent started this post and not the actual runner who needs these answers.
Teammates are stupid. Have your own mind, make your own decisions. It is possible to go through college without partying and/or remain a virgin.
Roper does not have the best running mechanics. She will likely run into some injury problems. Do not pick a school based on one person you think you may want to train with.
Of the places mentioned, Austin is the best place to train and live. College Station is a bit redneck. Waco is the worst.
Best Academically: 1. Rice, 2. UT, 3. A&M, 4. Baylor. But you also have to consider what you want to study. If you are into agriculture, go to A&M, if you are into Christianity (Baptist), go to Baylor, all are great for pre-med, but Rice and UT are the best.
Money: Baylor and Rice are private and costs about twice as much as public universities like UT and A&M. Make sure to put a number value to any scholarship offers and calculate the remaining cost. An offer that covers 15% of costs for a year at Baylor still leaves you with a larger bill than a full priced (no scholarship) year at UT. But try not to let money be the deciding factor. With grants, loans, and smart money management, you can go where you want.
And Baylor, what is up with all that praying? Seriously, it is just a stupid workout or race. Stop bugging God with such childish requests. Save it for life/death situations.
JUST RUN! IT IS THAT SIMPLE.
