And I agree, the best thing about racing is getting in a proper battle with someone else, even if you're competing for 50th place in a XC race. Being someone's enemy for half an hour, fighting them and not giving up at all, then shaking hands and having a laugh at the end of it; that's what makes it fun and why I love racing.
I couldn't agree more guys. My favourite part of that whole race was that little section where we dueled (though I may not have said that if I lost the duel :-) ).
Feather - cheers, and welcome. I rarely nail a 'perfect' week, but I do move things around to accomodate how I'm feeling, so I generally manage my sessions and a decent volume. Flexibility is key for me. Is there a reason why you're down on what you were doing, pace-wise, a couple of months ago?
