Why doesn't anyone care about Native Americans?

I agree with everything you said except the Apache part.

I dont notice other people claiming to be Apache just because they have heard the name or seen it in a western movie. Apache Indians, although they now have separate bands, are by far the most unorthodox, savage, spiritual people not only in the Western hemisphere, but in the entire world. Every single thing about the apache life is unique and beautiful. Their Crown dance. Their song. Their medicine. Their ceremonies. Their connection to another world is simply unbelievable. It's like they are aliens from another planet. There is nothing on earth like the Apache Indian.

All of this is coming from a person who is not an Apache, yet has attended Indian Boarding Schools my entire life and witnessed it first hand.

Theres Apaches.......and then theres everyone else. They are in a class of their own.

It's a funny way of asking people to act like you don't exist.

Hey clown, whites arent the only ones who spend money at casinos. Indians themselves spend alot of money there, and lose alot of money there. Ever think about that? Of course you dont. Of course you dont.

Casino profits do not just benefit the tribe. The benefit the entire county that the casino is located in. Many parts of the United States are so poor, that their local government cannot pay to fix and build things. Every single day, a tribe uses casino profits to build or fixe something new that EVERYONE in the area can use and enjoy.

If it wasnt for that Indian casino down the road, you probably wouldnt even have a bridge to drive across, and you little (white) children probably would not have a swingset or teeter totter to play on at their (white) elementary school. You junior high son (who is white) wouldnt even have a basketball gym to play in (or you watch him sit on the bench because he wasnt as good as the redskins) if it wasnt for casino profits.

If casino profits fall, then the quality of life for white people dramatically falls as well.

Why doesn't anyone care?

They pay no taxes.

They have been given plenty of land per person to do whatever they want.

They have massive inflows of federal dollars building the nicest facilities.

They are a protected class for employment/hiring purposes.

In short, they have been handed plenty of advantages the rest of us don't get.

But,

They don't work hard.

They chose not to assimilate.

They pissed away their reimbursement.

They drink their days away and are generally non-productive.

They are a higher crime risk than most groups.

In short, people don't care because they don't want to succeed. And in America, if you don't want to succeed, don't expect the rest of us to cry when you fail.

When I was in elementary school and jr high in GA in the 70s-80s, we actually had a decent amount of education about the plight of the Cherokee and other tribes in Georgia who were sent on the trail of tears. It actually became part of a state mandated ciruculum on Georgia history. Not sure what they teach today, but it was pretty progressive in pre-multiculturalism/PC 90s. Of course, while we all were moved by stories of the suffering and indignities of Native Indians, the subject of how to make reparations or the current condition of the reservations was not examined. And that is probably why no one cares about the Native Indians. We are taught that it is all history. We not taught about any connection between the history and what is happening today and are not asked to think about whether we have any responsibility or duty to the reservations.

All groups of people are treated very poorly either by others, or a small ruling class of their own kind through history.

Indians for the most part have not gotten past what was a terrible period for them.

Nobody likes a bunch of whiners. There is no good reason we should care about people who don't care about themselves enough to make an attempt at changing with the rest of the world.

Not entirely true. The Dawes Act gave them land, 160 acres, to the head of the family. Once that was taken up then the rest of the land on the reservations was opened up to white settlement, further diminishing their lands. Also, they were given the crappiest land, where nothing will grow and it takes 10-20 acres of land to give 1 cow enough food.

Their is a massive inflow of federal dollars to build nice facilities, but not to maintain. I am aware of one school on a reservation that had an Olympic size swimming pool built for them, but doesn't have the resources to maintain it, so it sits empty. The schools may look nice, but they are chronically underfunded.

As for employment, there just aren't many opportunities on reservations. Same for education. It is a common stereotype that all Natives can go to college for free but that is definitely not the case.

Not accurate-

Most Indians are less that 1/2 Indian "by blood" and that's not just members the 5 Civilized Tribes.

Because of intermarriage, keeping blood quantum high would eventually result in tribes with no members. The politicians running the tribes and making money off of the system will never let that happen. So blood quantum levels keep getting set lower and lower.

Apparently many Americans don't know or seem to care about what happened to native/indian people. Its not apart of our nationalcurriculm. Most Americans probably just know about Pocahantas, Dances with Wolves, etc, which doesn't cover much of the negative side. In Canada, Natives are seen stereotyped as lazy, drug-abusing drunks, and there is merit for why they have brought this stereotype upon themselves.

Up here, Natives that are carded have their post-secondary schooling paid for, something that most of the rest of the population would give anything for. The majority of them do not take this awesome opportunity, and instead prowl the streets looking for money, hooking, stealing, and generally just causing mischief. I have seen it firsthand, and it bothers me to no end. I consider it along the lines of a rich white kid that has every opportunity to succeed (money to pay for school, probably went to private school, parents can pay for tutors etc) but chooses instead to live off the fat, if you get my drift. I won't lie, I am biased towards Natives because they can choose to get themselves out of their household if it is not a good environment, but the majority do not. Don't get me wrong, there are some that use this opportunity and become successful in life, a contributing member of society as doctors, lawyers, and tradesmen. All it takes is a strong will to succeed to better oneself. It's like when you see Natives driving big frackin trucks that have a bumper stick that says "Thanks for the truck whitey."

The fact of the matter is, Natives Americans are becoming extinct. This day and age requires you that you almost need to get some sort of post-secondary school. Other than working the rigs (extremely hard job, I've done it) there are not many jobs available to those that do not pursue post-secondary. Even with the rigs, you need to have several tickets that give you the training to do these jobs. I read in an earlier post that it's basically assimilate into society or be wiped out. This is what happens in every ecosystem in the world, the strong survive. You either survive by bettering yourself, learning new skills that will allow you to survive, or you die out. Simple as that.

In 1492 American Natives were essentially the same as European Aboriginines that inhabited 99.5% of Europe back in the day when the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock. Onluy a scate 1/2 of one percent of Europe were civilized. Western Europe was then a hodgepoge of primitives and aboriginine savages who uttered, shrunk heads, and used their own urine and excrement for medicines. The aboriginine Ostrogoths came from Central Asia and dominated Germany. The Huns came from East-Central Asia and conquered France. The Vandals came from North-East Asia and conquered Spain and North Africa. All of these savages at one time or another sacked Rome and Greece. The only civilized influence came from North East Asia Mongolia who occupied Russia, Ukraine, Baltic, Poland for 400 years. Thus the arrival of the Europeans in the Americas was a matchup of savage and uncivilized peoples whose average lifespans were very brief.

If you are a member of a federally recognized tribe, you are entitled to free health care for life. Many are also on public assistance. There are multiple scholarship opportunities available for those who choose to actually study in high school and try to do something with their lives. 3 kids at our local Rez high school just got Gates scholarships. They had good grades but SAT scores in the 400's, but because of their background, have been given this opportunity to go on to college.

Despite many potential educational opportunities, many, or most, students do not study and most drop out. Drug and alcohol use is rampant. Teen pregnancy and unwed teen moms are the norm. STD's are epidemic. Suicide rates are huge, as are alcohol related trauma and violence.

Yes, many bad things happened to Native Americans. Bad things have also happened to many other groups around the world, for as long as recorded history allows us to know. Bad things happened to poor Irish. To European Jews. Etc Etc.

But Native Americans are not incarcerated on reservations. They can move away, get an education, get a job, whatever, just like anyone else. Or they can get an education and come back to the Rez and work as a teacher or a nurse or a doctor. They do not pay tax on the Rez. Or they can choose to sit on their rears and be depressed and drink and smoke meth and have babies and live in beat up trailers.

How about getting an education and then coming back and trying to open a business? Good luck. Many of the reservations are operated like Bulgaria was back in the 1960's - there is no free market, all business ventures have to go through a labyrinthine tribal bureaucracy that is often riddled with corruption and nepotism, there is no real estate market. A few manage to do it. Most don't bother, or have grown up in such a dependency state that going into business would not even occur to them unless it is something like selling fry bread down at the flea market.

What is exactly is society supposed to do? Most of us do indeed appreciate that the Natives lost their land and their way of life. But realistically, we are not going to turn back the clock. Most of this happened in the 1800's and early 1900's. I suppose one can choose to continue to dwell on this, or move on.
