Wake me up when he starts beating Derrick.
Wake me up when he starts beating Derrick.

Diego Estrada has come a long way. He was pretty much ignored coming out of high school. None of the big shot programs gave him a shot. Only NAU gave him an opportunity. After 4 years, he's become an all American several times in both track and cross country and now will be an Olympian this summer in London.
If this story doesn't inspire, then I don't know what will. It gives all the "little guys" the ability to see that anything is possible.
Go Diego, you got a fan here.
Nice post.
I am also a fan of Diego.
Not so much a fan of the racist nonsense around here that tries to pass itself off as anti-racist.
Go Diego!

You seem to have missed the point at every conceivable level.
Huh? 27:31 is basically the same thing as 27:32, except when the 27:31 guy is white and the 27:32 guy isn't, amirite?
See you at the next meeting.

No, you are not right.
Let me make a wild, and totally unsubstantiated assumption and assume that you have the capability of rational thought.
Five top three finishes at NCAAs is not basically the same thing as zero top three finishes. You with me so far. Let me know where you get lost and maybe we can go a bit slower for you.
So far, so good?
OK. Now, picture this. Alan Webb places, what? 11th? People get excited about that. Who came in 10th? 9th? 8th? Why don't people get more excited about these folks? Not only were they reasonably close to Webb, they actually beat him. But nobody paid any attention. Must be racism, right?
Now we move on to German Fernandez. German ran 3:46 a week ago. Lots of folks talked about it. How many other 3:46 performances have there been among the college ranks this year? I'll give you a hint, it's about a zillion. How many of these got the coverage that Fernandez' did? Here's another hint, another 'z' word - zero. Now why is that? Must be racism, right?
Oh wait, Fernandez is also hispanic. Hmmm, this is really confusing. Estrada gets ignored because he is hispanic. Fernandez gets loads of attention out of all proportion to his current performance because he is hispanic.
Wait that doesn't make any sense. Why in the world would one hispanic get less attention than his current performance deserves while the other one gets more? Well, I suppose that will be an eternal mystery to anyone who looks for racism as the cause of all inequities in life.
Of course, someone who has a brain would be able to see beyond this. They would ponder, "Hmmm, some folks get more attention after a performance than it seems like the performance itself justifies while others get less. I wonder if it has anything to do with the previous record of these folks. Maybe, just maybe it has something to do with the fact that Webb is the American mile record holder, Derrick has been the top American finisher at NCAAs multiple times and recently took down Lalang (who is widely considered to be a monster talent), and Fernandez set high school and collegiate records galore several years ago."
Nah, couldn't be anything that they have in common, could it? Couldn't possibly be the fact that these folks have a history that has built up excitement around them, regardless of their race. Because, after all, racism is the answer to all unfairness, isn't it?
Well, isn't it?
I got lots of love for my new Olympian...Diego Estrada!! te amo, I love youuuuuuuuu. You are a God!!

This thread is about race. Period.
You are correct, it is about race. A specific race. One that was run last night at Stanford, in which Diego Estrada ran 27:32. Let's get back to that, shall we?
Diego ran like 10-15 seconds faster than I thought he could go, major props to that dude. He ran his ass off that's for sure.
I've been talking about Diego since 2008. He's been consistently right there with the big boys, but just hasn't had any big wins yet.
He did most of the work in making Ryan Hill's collegiate record in that indoor 3000 possible. I expected him to challenge Derrick at NCAA but he just didn't have it that day. But one day he will.
I'm rooting more for Derrick because I think ultimately he's more talented, and he'd be representing the U.S. if he got on the Olympic team (big if). I think both are too young to be a factor in the Olympic finals though. But 2013 World Championships could get interesting.

Pretty much.
Why give him love, he would have been lapped by bekele.
