I laughed out loud when I read this. Harlem is entirely gentrified. It has some places I guarantee you can't remotely afford. The "rat-infested" picture you describe sounds like a TV show about Harlem...in the 60s.
On a similar note, how bad is the Upper West Side? I found a place on the UWS on Craigslist, but I'm not so sure about the neighborhood. After seeing West Side Story, I don't know if I could handle such a tough hood.
And what about SoHo? I mean, I know it's mostly industrial, but there is some housing there, right? If I live there, will the industrial clatter wake me up at the crack of dawn?
I have a friend who lives on the northern edge of Chinatown, but I would never live in such a neighborhood. I've seen Gangs of New York, so I know just what the area is like. Guys just walk around throwing axes and shit. Tuberculosis everywhere. No thanks.

Don't forget about the riots in the Village.

True. Almost makes me want to move to Brooklyn. Except that I have some family in Carol Gardens and they tell me that all the barge activity on the Gowanus results in a lot of noise. All the brownstone they have to bring in to build that new Park Slope neighborhood plus the coal gasification for the street lights results in non-stop activity on the canal.
keep ur cracka ass where you at!
