LOVE THE TOTAL WAR SERIES
But here is my ranking:
4. Halo with friends, always a good time
3. Team Fortress 2
2. Civ IV (hours and hours, such a complex game)
3. Starcraft II - The epitome of RTS
I'm big on "Skyrim" right now, but I just found "Another World" for the iPhone. Going to get lost in that.
I forgot about the Mario Kart games. They just get better with each console generation. The inclusion of motion-controlled steering and online multi-player for Mario Kart Wii were great upgrades.
The Mario Kart series should be considered in the GOAT discussion simply because of their mass appeal over a wide variety of demographics.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Vice City
Fifa
PES
Tony Hawk 3
Crash Team Racing
Assassins Creed II
Wasted a ton of time as a kid/in undergrad with video/PC games, but I was the happiest I've probably ever been in my life. Favs (semi-chronologically, as I remember):
Lords of the Realm II
Descent I and II
Raptor: Call of the Shadows
Age of Empires II
Madden Series
NHL Series
Diablo II (responsible for many hours/days of wasted life)
Total War Series (mostly Rome and Medieval II)

They have to be classified for me.
Hanging out with guy friends: GoldenEye (N64)
Hanging out with guy/girl mix: Mario Kart (any of them do)
Being a socially inept loser by myself: many from the Final Fantasy series (FFVI is my favorite [SNES])
Being a socially inept loser that loves to kill zombies: Resident Evil 5 - Mercinaries (PS3)
Puzzle game solo or 1 on 1: Super Puzzle Fighter II (PS1 - also PSN)
Damn, generation after generation I've wasted time on these.
Pretty close to my list except I preferred FFVII and never got into the zombie or puzzle stuff.
I did waste a ton of time playing the Civilization series, and there was a game on the Genesis called Warsong that I wasted at least an entire Summer on.
It's about to be diablo 3 when may 15th hits
Zelda Ocarina of Time N64
Mario Kart for N64, I like it a lot for the Wii too but it's just not the same.
Echo
Goldeneye
THPS
Fifa
COD
Halo.
Multiplayer with friends (not online) thats what its all about
It was Final Fantasy VI for years until Fallout 3 finally displaced it. I'm working my way through New Vegas now (which, I know, has been out for a while, but I don't have the time to play games as much as I used to, unfortunately), but so far I haven't liked it as much as 3. I also have fun memories of playing Guitar Hero with my friends in college, but solo, that game is pretty terrible.
Tecmo Super Bowl (NES)
Mega Man 2 (NES)
The Legend of Zelda (NES)
Super Mario 64 (N64)
Goldeneye 007 (N64)
Grandia II (DC)
Crusader Kings

To be honest, my current career is probably a direct result of the hours I spent playing SimCity3 through high school and undergrad.
favorite RPG is Earthbound. That game goes for a lot on eBay. Surprised no mention for Grand Theft Auto series. Guess crowd here is a little more sophisticated.
I like video games toooo! My favorites by system::
Classic PC: Oregon Trail
Classic arcade: Skeeball!
Arcade: X-Men, Virtua Fighter 2
NES: Duck Tales, Mega Man 2
SNES: Donkey Kong Country, Mega Man X, Killer Instinct, Chrono Trigger
N64: Goldeneye, Zelda: Ocarina of Time
New PC: Civilization 2/4, Halo: CE

If I had to choose a favorite, it would probably be between Halo: PC and Dragon Age. Amazing story, bad ass equipment. squad control, and Morrigan ... Oh Morrigan ... MMmmm. *Virtual humping noises*
