No, 16 was the total number of repetitions, the work-out was actually 8x(400+200). It was probably Steve Magness who made this mistake on his blog post.
Not right yet. The first interval of the sequence is 200m and not 400m.

If this is true, it takes the cake, methinks. Got a source?
How is this impressive? You do realize that this is close to Bekele's 5k pace (60.5 or so seconds for 400m). Guys like Guerrouj, Bekele, and Geb have done similar volumes of 1000s at this pace without thinking twice about it.
Of course he could. 60 second 400s don't take too much out of him.

they ran 400's on 3 minutes at Wichita East. The recoveries depended on how fast they were run. Timmons always had a large swim clock set up a few yards beyond the finish line, so that everyone could see it. The number of repetitions varied by the season.
Timmons was big on flexibility exercises too, especially keeping the arms and shoulders loose. The team did many flexibility exercises, similar to swimmers, before beginning the running and often during pauses in the training.

Remember that Ryun had many problems when he tried changing the program that got him to the top.
